Why is our opening day game time TBD
« Topic Start: January 06, 2013, 09:48:26 PM »
Also anyone have any guesses at what time it will be ? 1:10? 7:05?

Is it TBD because they might put us on national TV

I believe all game times are TBD.  Usually it's an afternoon game; anywhere from 1-3pm starting time.

Could be TV.  Could be Weather.  Could be how the rest of the teams shake out.

Dunno why we would. Post playoff Nats with Strasburg starting would be a stretch, but then against a Marlins team that sucks, has become notorious this offseason and lost whatever fans it had remaining along with its entire roster? Wasn't gonna happen, and it isn't.

Rangers/Astros is already set in stone, considering the historic move to the AL, an obvious choice. ESPN has Sox/Yanks, Braves/Phillies, As/Mariners and Cards/DBacks for the following day. In other words, a 1pm start is guaranteed.

Hopefully not, considering I have to work the next day.  :old:

Also, what Colander said. No chance they put the Marlins in primetime.

It may depend on who's starting for us.

Hopefully not...Metro always gets the heebie-jeebies over these prime-time starts. Besides, I've always liked the afternoon season openers.

I don't think so, they already planned out all the opening day games they'll broadcast on National TV:

Yeah, the primetime opener is the Astros AL debut against their new cross-state division rival.  I think all games are TBA so they can delay the national tv decisions until they have a better idea of how the offseason shakes out.

True, who wants to watch Miami @ Washington after this offseason. The next series, Washington @ Cincinnati, looks a lot more interesting.

I hope not. Those primetime games in late March/early April can be downright cold.

Yep.  And it's likely that SS would be starting that Sunday game.  Could see that moved to ESPN, assuming they do Sunday night baseball the first weekend of the season.

Also, the Braves game that next Saturday would be a prime game for FOX if they do games that early in the season.  I'm not sure if they do or not...

It will be interesting to see what kind of attendance there is for those games.

In the past two seasons the Nats' lowest attendances have come in April:

2012 - Wednesday 18th April vs Astros (14,520) - weather 53 and overcast
2011 - Tuesday 12th April vs Phillies (13,413) - weather 55 and overcast

I love the cold early season games, I get to wear my Nationals hoodies or fleeces that I can't wear in July and August. But then again, I could just save those for October nowadays.

I'm gonna just take that Monday off so I can watch all the games. Screw it, you only live once. I bet we are a 1:00 start.

I think I'll be dissapointed if we have those kinds of numbers again after the season the Nats just had.  School, weather, whatever.  We'll see if the theory holds true that attendance lags one year behind on-field performance.

With the exception of the absolute debut in 2005 and the Nats Park opener (ESPN Sunday Night Baseball) in 2008, every Nats home opener has started in the afternoon:

2005 - Thursday 14th April vs Diamondbacks - 19.05
2006 - Tuesday 11th April vs Mets - 13.05
2007 - Monday 2nd April vs Marlins - 13.05
2008 - Sunday 30th March vs Braves - 20.05
2009 - Monday 13th April vs Phillies - 15.05
2010 - Monday 5th April vs Phillies - 13.05
2011 - Thursday 31st March vs Braves - 13.05
2012 - Thursday 12th April vs Reds - 13.05

...and you bloody well bet I'll be there for the ninth home opener whatever the weather - if it's going to be cold I'll just break out my old Expos sweatshirt. (Thing is though, what are they going to run out of this time along about the fourth inning...hot dog buns? straws? beer cups? bottled water? patience?)

I remember opening day 2009....they ran out of hot water....my wife had ordered a hot chocolate and they brought her a cup of cold water with the chocolate powder poured into it....since the water was cold, it didn't dissolve...good times ....

I take the MLB Opening Day off nearly every year, whether I have tickets or not.
