It would've helped if Nieves had made contact.

Yes. But the suicide squeeze requires a level of execution that should only be expected from the best bunters who do it regularly. Wil is a part time player who has made his bones this season batting 8th (not a lot of bunts happening before the pitcher) and hitting liners to RF. Gotta let him do what he does best. That ball was tailing outside. For most bunt attempts, a batter is going to pull the bat back. The squeeze requires a bunter to act like a true hitter - the ability to go with the pitch. It becomes a split-second decision to go for the bunt or foul it off. Wil is not the guy to do that, nor is any part-time player.

Besides. There is no reason to risk that with the pitcher due up. Should have let Wil either go for the sac fly, walk, RF hit, or IF grounder to plate the runner. Let Mock try to bunt or hit the runner home.

I'm surprised Dunn didn't make the play, he's picked several like it before, but the throw was pretty wide too.  Not sure how they determine the call there.

It's a bad throw and should be charged to Zimmerman. Just because you pick some of them you aren't expected to pick every one that is off line and in the dirt.

I'm sure Zim will take the error for the extra protection Dunn gives him in the lineup.
He isn't used to seeing the pitches he is seeing

I don't mean to be picky but at $10M a year ... you are.

I don't disagree that the timing was bad but we don't know whether Riggleman has been working with Nieves on that very play (no one would expect it with Nieves at the plate) and Nieves just failed.

Not according to the way they score plays. Money does not figure into it (unless they have added something while I wasn't looking). Also, you can also make the case that at 3.3 million, not to mention the whining about Zimmerman being a gold glover, you are also expected to make a more accurate throw to 1B.

I was making dinner, and I never advocated doing it again so soon with a slow-ass catcher :bang:

You have high expectations for your left fielders.

Baseball lessons I've learned this year:

-BA is crud

-if the Lerners just paid everyone more money, they'd be better players

:D

I don't disagree.   I'm just biased to the hot corner.

It was a tough pitch to get the bunt down. That's the tough thing. As the 8th hitter, you have no idea what to expect with the pitcher due up.

Complaints aside, one thing Riggleman has established now is that regardless of the guy in the box or the guy on 3rd (we've had the following combos: Dukes-Hammer; Nyger-Morse; Nieves-Dukes) with a guy on 3rd and less than 2 outs, the squeeze could be on. He should really not do it for the rest of the season and see if he gets success with a counter strategy.

How does being slow factor into this? I didn't think Nieves was that slow anyway.

I played 3B too and I tend to believe that throws have to be executed.
