Give him the surgery now.  He is so young by the time he is MLB ready he won't have the pitching limits on him, he'll have the innings limits down in the minors.

Zachary Levine of the Houston Chronicle is reporting that Lucas Giolito anagrams to "is it a go, ol' UCL?"

And this exactly. Several very successful major leaguers had this happen to them very early on in the minors.

The way we talk about elbow surgery like it's nothing makes me wonder what the fail rate is- i couldnt find anything during my brief search

Keep looking, the data's out there.   Though if a lousy pitcher has it, and never makes the bigs, maybe it had nothing to do with the surgery.

Last stat I heard was the chances of a player coming back to full strength after TJS is about 85 to 90 percent.  Many pitchers actually comeback stronger than before the surgery.

That's better than the crap that we are stuck with on MLB.com Nationals coverage

I wonder if this is still current.

You have got to figure that he was very aware of the potential surgery when he signed with the Nats. If he went to UCLA the arm would hve been bothering him at the start of next season and at some point he would have the surgery and miss close to two seasons. He would have lost a lot of value at that point.Who better to re-hab with than the Nats.

Kevin Goldstein and Jason Parks (Baseball Prospectus) had Rick Giolito on their podcast in early August. I think it's gives the listener a pretty good idea of what went into the decision to sign with the Nats.

Rick Giolito states several times that John Savage (UCLA Head Baseball Coach) was one of his key advisers, so I'd imagine your hypothesis isn't too far from the truth.

Was this pick a mistake now that he needs TJ?  Or is the TJ no big deal (maybe even a small plus?)?

It was always the most likely outcome. Better now than when he's 25-26.

It's why he was even there for us to pick him- knock 10% off his chances of being successful, but I dont think this effects his ceiling at all. It still is a risky pick, but not that much more risky than any other high school pitcher

I think people were pretty much expecting this.  Nats already factored it in.

I'm glad he's getting it done now.  Would have sucked to get him ramped up and then had to have it done...

TJS is working out for the previous two pitchers in the Nationals organization that got it. I fail to see an issue.

I don't think anyone's unhappy. Plus, his rehab, recovery, and command-refinding years will all take place in the low minors. By the time he's 22-23, he can be the beast we wanted him to be.

Lucas Giolito, the #nats top pick in the 2012 draft, saw Dr. Yocum Weds. and will have Tommy John surgery on Aug. 31 per team source.
