Jason Bay is a bad fit for the Mariners defensive philosophy. I would assume that they would get him because they feel like Gutierrez can cover a lot of his range deficiencies.

I've heard recently on some of the XM programs that Bay's defensive deficiencies have been overblown and that his defensive metrics don't tell the entire story.  And no, it wasn't his agent telling the story.  :)

Baseball This Morning's hosts were talking about Jason Bay to the Mariners is a very real possibility as well.  Mariners could be players in the American League next year with a pitcher or two.

Mariners had around $50m in payroll fall off this year, so they are armed and ready for action.

M's should sign Lackey.  Lackey + Felix would be sick.

The Mariners were stupid. They could have had a core of Strasburg+ King Felix. That duo would rival Randy Johnson-Curt Schilling.

My guess is that he will field DH much better than whoever fielded that position last year.

The Ms really don't need great starting pitching beyond King Felix.  They can resign Jarrod Washburn and make him look good with that big outfield and guys who chase flies.

Fenway tends to make left fielders look worse on UZR due to the wall.  The wall tends to rob LFs of a lot of plays that could otherwise be made.  They have an adjustment, but it still is not quite right.  It's known as the Manny Effect.  I don't know if there is something similar with respect to +/-.

Considering the source caused me to reject the GEICO explanation.

Id like to see the Orioles get some pitching, nothing that will get in the way of us but something positive none the less. I want them to be a good team in the AL East because I'm tired of the Red Sox and Yankees being the talk of the coast.

The Braves intend to trade a starting pitcher in order to get the bat they need, according to Ken Rosenthal of FoxSports.com. Derek Lowe and Javy Vazquez appear to be the two most likely candidates to be moved.

After shoring up the back of their bullpen with Billy Wagner and Takashi Saito, GM Frank Wren can turn his attention to the lineup. The Braves have expressed interest in Josh Willingham in the past, and Tim outlined some potential options back in October. Nelson Cruz, who is drawing interest despite not necessarily being on the block, could be a fit as well.

Given the shorter commitment and superior 2009 performance, Vazquez would have more value on the trade market, but stranger things have happened.

DO IT RIZZO!

That would be a horrible trade if we picked up Lowe for Willingham.

Vazquez would be much more appealing.

I don't know Vazquez's contract status but his numbers last year were ridic.

I don't care what his salary is but it'd be nice if we had him for at least 2 years.

Oh crap. Vazquez would be awesome to get. His stats were sick last year. Lets add him to our rotation :P

that's tough. you'd probably get a nice package for Vazquez at deadline or a draft pick at the end of the season.

still, I would probably consider it. We only have Willingham here for 2 more years anyways and he really sucked during the last few months of last season.

yayyyyy. http://www.mlbtraderumors.com/2009/12/nationals-talking-to-jon-garland.html

Nationals talking to Jon Garland per Peter Gammons

Quote
In search of a couple of starting pitchers this winter, the Nationals are talking to free agent Jon Garland, according to ESPN's Peter Gammons. We've also heard that the Nats were interested in John Smoltz and John Lackey, and I think it would be pretty cool if they ended up with four Jon/John's in their rotation (don't forget John Lannon!).

Only one non-Lannon Nats' starter eclipsed 100 IP last year (Craig Stammen at 105.2 IP), and Garland would certainly help that situation. He's made at least 32 starts and thrown at least 191.2 innings every year since 2002, during which time he has a respectable 4.38 ERA.

The Braves would be amazingly dumb to trade Vazquez for Willingham, unless they think he's never going to be that good again.

MLBTR readers discussed Garland about a month ago.

EDIT: Beat by 14 seconds because I fixed the spelling of Lannan's name in the quote.

Garland doesn't strike out anyone.

I used to think the dude was awesome until I started to dig into his stats. Lets just say I was less than impressed.

He's not awe-inspiring but he would be a great addition to the team.

Gives us stability at the top of the rotation. A guy who is a proven winner and can show the young guys the ropes. He's only 30 so it's not like he's over the hill.

Give him 3 years - $25 Million
