Ross pitched over 150 innings last year.  Giolito pitched under 120. Giolito will hit an innings limit before Ross does

That's why Giolito needs to be converted to the bullpen for the rest of the year around the trading deadline.

I disagree. He's still coming back from TJ surgery and I dont believe its in HIS best interest, and the teams as well, to kess with his routine.

5 IP 6 H 1 BB 3 R 2 ER 7K, but tagged with the L.

It seem the control issues are gone so the changeup probably plays and his new mechanics are fine.  Hopefully he goes to AAA after the ASB

I wish I could get excited about our No. 1 prospect, but shouldn't he be lighting it up by now?  He has always got strikeouts but has always been very hittable. Some say he's "looking on secondary pitches" and I'm sure he's on a development curve, but I wish he'd dominate at AA. Sorry, I'm  :oldy:

AA is typically the biggest roadblocks prospects face.  The best hitters are typically in AA.  His FIP is currently 3.11 which means that the contact he is giving up is predominantly singles.  For comparison Syndergaard had a WHIP of 1.07 in AA then 1.48 in AAA

Not sure I'm seeing what you're trying to compare with.  How about FIP to FIP, or WHIP to WHIP?

WHIP a response to OP's comment about him being hittable, FIP to show that it's not hard contact that he's giving up

Might not be giving up hard contact, but last night he didn't even finish 5 innings and gave up five runs. Lots of hits and four or five walks. I say it again, this isn't what you want to see from your #1 prospect.

Well, there are a lot of things we don't know. At his level of the minor leagues, he might be primarily working on offspeed pitches or working with coaches to fix weaknesses.

Additionally, a really important part of developing MLB pitcher mental toughness is hitting rough patches and getting through them. Do you want a pitcher in our rotation who's never dealt with a bad outing and doesn't know how to bounce back? Everybody here hated Strasburg when he was blaming the weather or his jock strap...

I never understand the Gio hate. He's not the best pitcher in the world, I get that. He also had a 3.79 ERA last year despite a .341 BABIP allowed which is ludicrously unlucky (since 2010 his highest BABIP allowed has been .294). He allowed a .672 OPS in the second half last year.

I'm betting that we get 175+ innings of an ERA between 3.25 and 3.75 next year, which I will take all day long from a #3/4 starter.

I mean, whatever you think of WAR, Gio was #22 in MLB last year in WAR. Guy just has to eat crap sandwiches from this fanbase though.

Lucas had his name taken down as probable starter for H-burg tomorrow.

Tomorrow would be his normal day and also Ross'. If (big if) Giolito comes up, who do you push to Tuesday?

I'd rather Voth come up.  Giolito to AAA and Voth to the bigs

Giolito. Give the staff a chance to coach him up on the scouting report

I'd imagine his IP limit is 140. If they limited him to 6 IP, that'd be 11 or so, or not even through August. A 5 IP limit (which I doubt would happen), would get him to mid-Sept. I doubt he gets the call, but I'd love it. If there was a playoff run, you only need 3-4 SPs anyways. Getting him to at least the end of August opens up a spot during Sept. call-ups.

He and Joe Ross are on really low pitch counts and innings so far. Baker has said they want to keep Joe Roster in the rotation from start to finish. I don't know how that's possible without some skipped starts eventually but they could get creative with Giolito. One of them needs to be ready to go if needed in October, Scherzer-Strasburg-Roark is a good top three. After that you can't go with Gonzalez.
