Pedro Astacio, RHP (2-10, 6.06)

Ryan Drese, RHP (7-10, 5.61)

Game Time: 7:05 PM

MLB Scouting Report:
Astacio will be making his fifth start for the Padres this season after coming over from the Texas Rangers. He is 2-10 with a 6.06 ERA for the season and 0-5 with a 5.97 ERA on the road. Though he has never started at PNC Park, he is 8-4 with a 5.03 ERA lifetime against the Pirates.

Drese will face the Padres for the first time in his career. In his last start, Drese's sinker wasn't in top form as he gave up four runs -- three earned -- in four innings against the Braves. The first run was scored in the third inning. With a runner on third base and one out, Chipper Jones hit a ground ball to third baseman Vinny Castilla, who threw to catcher Brian Schneider. But Schneider let the ball go by him for an error, allowing Rafael Furcal to score on the play. The Braves scored three more runs off Drese in the fourth inning as Jeff Francoeur hit a one-out solo home run and Marcus Giles drove in Ryan Langerhans and Rafael Furcal with a two-out double to left field.

One look at tonight's lineup and I am already wondering where the runs will come from.  Look at 4-5-6 hitters - although Wilson has his rare moments, Church and Castilla haven't had a key hit in a month.  Unless Bennett hits a home run he will not score tonight with Guzman and Drese batting behing him.  That leaves us with the top of the order.  Hopefully Brad won't whiff, Vidro can hit something hard, and then NJ can drive them in.  Otherwise, we are looking at another 3-2 game.

I have to be honest...  there's not a whole lot in tonight's lineup to be happy about :?

If Drese doesn't bring his good stuff tonight, I don't think we have much of a chance.  If he does, well...  we'll see.

My lineup would be:

Carroll - ss
Church - rf
Vidro - 2b
Johnson - 1b
Wilkie - cf
Wilson - lf
Bennett - c
Blanco - 3b
Drese - p

I would only use Guillen and Castilla in an emergency.  I would have Baerga and Cipicky ready to pinch hit and Guzman can pinch run.  I have no idea what Scheider's status is.

Guzman, right now, is playing as well as he has all season.  And he's hitting much better than Castilla and better than Guillen.

Okay, that's enough of the doom and gloom.  Astacio is pitching!  Isn't it interesting that two guys who started the season with the Rangers are strarting tonight?

GO NATS!

I swear to God.  Our lineup is putrid.  A lead off double and then Vidro FAILS to move the runner to 3rd.  The Padres then do the correct thing and walk Johnson to get to our clean up hitter.  Double play, end of inning.  If it wasn't Wilson it would have been Church or Castilla.

Sigh :x

These guys are just not hitting line drives.  Too many fly-outs.  With RFK, we need liners.  I don't know what these guys are thinking.

Has anyone said (or know) what's up with Don Buford?

Some Beech.  We just gave Greene a base when he should have been out TWICE.

Please, no more 2 hour team meetings if this what is going to be the result.  I wonder what they talked about?  It must not have had anything to do with playing fundamental baseball.

I noticed Bennett was getting confused with Livan last night too.  I suspect it has mostly to do with Bennett's inexperience catching these guys.

Eso - I think maybe Bennett has his limitations - but heck, he's been with these guys since spring training this year!~

Bennett has been with the guys since spring training, because the Nats don't have anyone in the minors even remotely ready to step in as the backup.

Hmm...did not know that Bennett's been working with the bullpen since Spring.  Guess they don't meld well, then.

At least Drese seems to pitching competently thus far.  Despite his teammates' best efforts to give free bases to the Pads.
