That's why I favor quantity and wouldn't sacrifice next years pick

I dont think Id do that either, but I at least understand the premise of it. Giolito is a stud, and even if he does need TJ, you're not going to get a comparable talent next year with either of the first rounders. But with the serious need of young talent in the system at the bottom levels(come next year, just about all of our 'real' prospects will be at Potomac or higher if we dont sign Gio), the extra pick(s) would help.

I don't know about that, if you're willing to take a risk on an injured player, you'll find someone - look at purke last year. Injury aside, look where we got goodwin last year. Even though wasn't in the same exalted class gong into last year's draft, would you trade Meyer for Giolito?

Different rules now. We wouldnt have had the ammo to take the gamble on Purke in the 3rd. He'd be back in school.

With slot issues, Goodwin also probably goes to South Carolina. We wouldn't have been able to pay him and draft other talent. He had leverage.

It's hard to compare previous years to new rules. If you're aggressive with one pick, you have to cut a couple others. So I can see the argument of nabbing an elite talent one year for 2 slot guys a year later. I don't think I personally would take that gamble. I just see the reasoning behind it.

I totally agree, I think that new rule Strasburg would have cost us Harper, I just dont think there are many guys worth the sacrifice

Just imagine if that happened. I would literally kill myself if I never got to experience Harper.

Beat reporters are sleeping on the job and the Nats front office is silent as usual.

Deadline is tomorrow at 5 PM.

...the important part. It would have taken Woodward and Bernstein to get someone to spill the beans on things like the Werth signing.

Why? Is there some rule that you have to pitch for three years if  you go to college?

Three years for a college but one year for juco

Three years for a college but one year for juco

A guess:

- If the kid is serious about an education, he goes to UCLA. In three years, he gets slot-restricted money. Roughly same as Nats can offer today.
- If he goes to junior college and offers himself for the draft next year, he gets slot-restricted money. Roughly same as Nats can offer today.

So: no predictions.

Would it be such a bad thing if they sign the 3 guys drafted late with first round(ish) talent in Bolt, Avis, and Poteet, and then get a draft pick next year for failing to sign Giolito?

Shouldn't this be happening soon now?

No team has more at stake than the Nats. Giolito is the difference between having one of the best drafts and having the worst.

Rizzo's job should depend on getting this signing done.

Nah, Keith Law's job ought to depend on whether the BS he posts ever resembles legitimate thinking.

I'm guessing that failure to sign a high school arm wont get him fired in the middle of a playoff run

Since Strasburg, we have gone through this deadline thing every year. Strasburg and Harper may have been different because they were must signs and were the most touted picks in a long ass time but for Little Gio, I am going to go ahead and say we sign him.

I agree.  Maybe we'll do it with 30 seconds to spare just to keep up the tradition. :D

This one shouldn't be complicated unless Rizzo is really considering giving up next year's pick
