Vindication for Mike Rizzo (and the Lerners).
« Topic Start: August 13, 2012, 09:07:32 AM »
118 games with a .617 winning percentage - maybe not stepping out there is the ticket.

It is a long season, but holy crap!

Not even close. The Rockies won a World Series in 2007. What happened to them after? The 2007 Padres were 75-60 on September 1, were they vindicated? Hell even another team in 2007 was 21 games over .500 on September 12. Was Omar Minaya a vindicated man at the beginning of Sept 2007?

The years of crap won't be vindicated in one season- we look like we're set to contend for a while, but we haven't yet

Rizzo was not the architect of The Plan, he has never been vilified to the degree of Kasten, Bowden, and the Lerners, so I would not say that he was a candidate for vindication. The Lerners certainty see themselves as being vindicated, but that assumes that bottoming out was the best path to success as opposed to simply the most profitable.

Some bunch of overpaid boys from up north.  Yankees, I think.  They win most years.  ;)

Drafted good players. Signed them. Added a couple of free agents. Yes, Jayson Werth has helped...and it's only money. They did not have to trade Strassburg / Storen or equivalent for Werth. Extended Ryan Zimmerman.

The owners have money, and they have been smart in spending it.

This is a solid organization: how else could the Nats have survived all the injuries?

Previous baseball owners in Washington did not have the money to compete with the Yankees, with Comiskey and Yawkey and the Hoffbergers. The Lerners do. Clark Griffith, the master trader, did well until baseball went to the "chain store" model, which we now call farm systems. Griffith could only afford a team in Chattanooga. In losing years, he would let the major league roster dwindle -- fail to replace injured players -- as a way to save money.

Consider the difference, and enjoy this team.

I think the Nats turned the corner when they hired Roy Clark,Jay Robertson and Brian Minniti.

Kris Kline was part of that group too, right?

They're finally on the right track but we'll see a few years from now.

There are some who will never forgive Rizzo and the Lerners for those miserable years. Me? Eh, they seem like a distant memory to me now.

once we have an equal number of non-miserable years, I'll forget- we're at 1.5 now, so not there yet

OK, that's fair, I guess. Does a playoff appearance help with that equation?

I'd say that equally as good as 100 losses is bad

I've forgotten, too. I look at those teams -- check Baseball Ref -- and can't remember most of the players. Admission: I suffered through Washington's 19-game losing streak in 1959, which broke the Fillies MLB record. Now all I remember about '59 is Pascual scaring the wits out of batters with that curve-ball, and Killebrew, Lemon, Allison, and Sievers drilling home-runs into the LF bleachers. And I look forward to this Nats team playing.
