Glad you like it.  It is easier to install things with the package manager.  So much free software!

This.  I <3 apt-get.

I don't know if you're being snarky or not, but I really do.  apt-get install foo, and installs the package along with whatever additional dependencies that package needs.

Much better than the dependency hell of RPM back in the day.  Package x requires package y.  So you download package y.  But to install package y, you needed to have installed package x!  I hated that crap.

What about that could possibly be interpreted as snarky?

And just for the record, I was being totally serious.  In spite of what JMad thinks, I am not UMD to Microsoft's Steelers ;)

I do that a lot.  It's not intentional.

I always liked Xubuntu, but the new one looks really nice.  Simple, but nice.  Still hate the default cursor set though.

JMad, Ubuntu skillz in particular are money in the bank. Puppy, not as much. Good choice.

You are learning the ways of the Force.

It's sick how it grabs all the other requisite packages.

Yep.  There are also some graphical front ends if you don't want to use the command line.  I don't remember if xubuntu has one installed by default or not.  You can also add more repos for even more software.

Linux flash works flawlessly. I understand some other, expensive machines don't run it so well :stir:

Yeah I know ubuntu has synaptic, wasn't sure about xubuntu.  I think they just call it "Install or Remove Software" or something like that in the menus.

Well, with all this snow, seems like a good time to play around and install a new distro
Arch or gentoo.... Hmm...

Xubuntu has Synaptic. as well. as far as I can tell from reading, Xubuntu is just a pared-down version of Ubuntu with XFCE.

we'll see about this.

i don't think this laptop is good enough to run flash even decently. was very choppy, even in Puppy.

Tell me about all the Windows programs I can install from the command line.

Ha.  I was just teasing, but you actually made my point for me.  Installing stuff in Windows is dead simple, and you don't need the command line to do it.  However, if you want to, most programs can be installed via command line, scripts, batches, etc.  It's not as consistently easy or uniform as it is with 'nix of course, but that's what happens when software is proprietary.  All the same, it can usually be done, though I don't know why anyone but IT departments would want to.  And yes I know you don't need the command line in most 'nix distros anymore, but I've personally always found it preferable to the GUI package manager.  I think it's great that Linux has caught up with Windows in that regard, but I think it's a little naive to believe that that's some kind of special advantage for Linux.

Don't be so sensitive, or JMad will call you the UMDNats of Linux :P

I use Windows all day, every day. Probably because Linux is easier to install as a VM, but still . . .

I'm just set in my ways.  Aside from gaming and photoshop, there's not much I couldn't do just as well in Linux given the same level of familiarity.  But I like Windows, and most of the really good Linux apps have excellent Windows ports, so no real reason to re-invent my own wheel at this point.

On the command-line side of things, I'm probably more comfortable in Linux at this point.  College + running this site = more time spent in a 'nix terminal than a Windows one.  I do have fond memories of installing DOS 6 file by file from pirated floppy disks though

I think JMad was asking about this a while back.  If not, it's neat anyway:

It's really easy in ubuntu, it's right there in the menu.  You can do it right from the live CD even.

I think JMad wanted to do a Puppy USB install, Pen Drive Linux has a how-to for that.
