Red Sox fire sale
« Topic Start: August 24, 2012, 06:05:30 PM »
Dodgers claimed Adrian Gonzalez and Josh Beckett off of waivers. Teams are currently discussing a deal that would have A-Gone, Beckett, Crawford, and Punto going to the Dodgers.

I just saw this on MLB.com and thought it was a joke.  Is this the same stan kasten that ran this team?

Makes you wonder what could have been if he'd had owners who wanted to spend some money

So they're getting a guy who probably won't play until late 2013, a bench player, a washed up pitcher that is a bad teammate, and a player who is having a down year by his standards (outside of his BA).

Three of them have large contracts as well.  Hope the Dodgers enjoy it.

ESPN adds:

Quote
Pitcher Rubby De La Rosa will be headed back to Boston as the centerpiece of the deal, sources say. De La Rosa topped out at 97 mph in his first start of the season last week after coming off Tommy John surgery. Also included are first baseman James Loney and prospects Ivan De Jesus (infielder) and Jerry Sands (outfielder), according to sources, plus another top prospect that is still unknown.

Gonzales is the big prize for LA, but you are putting him into a pitchers park, paying a huge sum to do so, and giving up some top pitching in the process.  This strikes me as insane.

Yeah, it's an awful deal.  They're giving up a few top prospects for three scrubs and a guy who is pretty much having a down year.  Not to mention they'll be getting nearly $200 million dollars worth in contracts combined.

Awful.

EDIT- Just checked at the COMBINED WAR for these four players is 4.9!

Well mostly it's the idea that a team would want Beckett and Crawford in the same trade that boggles my mind. So to rephrase: Beckett AND Crawford???

Also, the Dodgers outfield already has Victorino, Kemp, and Ethier. Granted, Victorino's only there for a couple months...

I think the Ethier contract is a stinker as well.

We'd have a crappy team full of overpaid aging stars - see Phillies, Philadelphia

I can not take a guy named Rubby seriously. It sounds like he can't keep his hands out of his pants.

He throws 97, has a decent curve and change, and is 22 years old

Scary for their own fans in 2015 when they can't sign anymore players or extensions.

Not really.  Crawford won't play until late 2013-2014, Beckett is washed and a locker room cancer (combining him with another cancer in Hanley), Punto is an average bench guy, and Gonzalez is the only real good player in the deal and even he's having a down year offensively and he's going to a pitcher's park.

This is an awful move if anything.  They're taking on more than $200 million in salary to combine what they already have on the books.

9:01pm: The Dodgers are expected to pick up more than $260MM of the $271.5MM in combined salary that the Red Sox are sending to them, a source tells Michael Silverman of the Boston Herald.

Absolutely insane.  The Red Sox must have compromising pictures of Stan Kasten.

Cameron can't see the logic behind this deal, other than to possibly boost LA attendance.

There’s no getting around the fact that the Dodgers likely just paid $20 for a gallon of milk. Given the prices everyone else is paying for milk, that seems pretty silly. If you happen to have lots of $20 bills and no milk, however, and there’s only one guy selling milk in your immediate vicinity, maybe you just complain about price gouging and hand over the $20. Depending on just how many $20s the Dodgers ownership has, this might not end up being quite as nuts as it looks on the surface.

Or, maybe I’m just over-thinking all of this, and the Dodgers just made a horrible, horrible trade. I’m honestly not sure.

Where does Crawford even fit in? They already have Kemp, Ethier, and Victorino out there.
