does anyone expect espn to write about how the nationals are the superior team and will maintain or grow their lead, so there is no real reason to watch or read about this race? ESPN will find away to write about races being alive right up until the leader clinches

True -- however, count how many articles have come out in the last two months about the Rays catching the Yanks, D-backs catching the Dodgers, the A's catching the Rangers, or even the Tigers/White Sox race...

Baserunning? Really? They're trailing by 5 games with 41 to play...and baserunning is going to make the difference? Is it just me or are people pining for the Braves to pass the Nats?

Yep.  I guess infield defense doesn't matter :lmao:

If you look at the schedule, it may still favor the Braves.

Nationals still have to play @PHI six times, six games against the Cardinals, three games against the Dodgers, and of course three at Turner Field.

Braves have a four game series at San Francisco and that's it as far as good teams they have to face. They see the Phillies, but they have dominated the Phillies whereas the Nats have had problems with them.

Their outfield defense saved them from losing the game a few innings earlier, so there's an argument to be made that great outfield defense > great infield defense if we're just basing it on this one game.

Their infield defense has cost them at least 2 games against us this year alone. They'd be a lot better off if their infield defense didn't suck

Swydan had two tweets from tonight's game:

In a related story, Jordan Zimmermann seems to have got the memo that my pitching staff is imploding, and didn't want to feel left out.

Looks like all the idiot Braves' fans will have to bottle up their hatred of Jason Heyward tonight.

They were from 4 hours ago, presumably after Heyward's homer.  I guess he went to sleep right afterwards.  Can't wait to read his tweets in the morning.  :D

7 games against the Cardinals, actually.

What's interesting is that Werth mouthed off about stopping the Phillies from celebrating on Broad Street but it's the Phillies that will be poised to play spoiler.

ATL closes against the Pirates. They are a good team this year.

Theyve made the fewest errors in baseball

Come on, get serious. You can't possibly watch that God Awful dreck and think they're a quality defensive infield. Just the fact that they didn't score Uggla's impossibly bone headed play an error tells you everything you need to know.

Fewest in the NL...Mariners, Yankees and White Sox have made fewer overall (http://espn.go.com/mlb/stats/team/_/stat/fielding).

He should be taken to task for his isolating the Braves' outfield defense but neglecting to admit the deficiencies of the infield.  They were close to imploding all night, good thing Freeman is really really tall because he was needing every inch last night.  Throws all over the place.

Hey Paul, UGGLA! :whip:

That might have been the single worst fielding gaffe I have ever seen. Although not as funny as the sac bunt attempt where 3 Astros literally tripped over themselves.

I wouldn't mind seeing Harper, Desmond, and Espinosa try bunting to get that infield moving around a bit.  Chipper has 40 year old legs and if they bunt it to the first base side, Uggla may screw something up again.

Even Putin now is on board.  He will single handedly hunt down Chipper and imprison him with Pu$$y Riot. He will not complain because it does no good to complain to Putin.

Well, the National League anyway. To say they are terrible at fielding is an overstatement. They're also second in UZR and third in DRS . This is not a bad defensive team. Uggla isn't any worse than Desmond has been, defensively anyway.

Uggla is not a good secondbaseman. I wouldn't be surprised if they moved him to third next year. But everyone else in that infield is pretty sure handed. The outfield is outstanding. Uggla just had a brain fart

They're both pretty poor, defensively.
