it also means Rizzo doesn't want to over-pay or get stuck with older guys on 3 and 4 year deals.  It sounds like, if the reporting is believable, that Rizzo doesn't want to go any further than 2 years with LaRoche.

I'd like to keep LaRoche, but I'm hopeful that Moore can replace quite a bit of that pop.  And as you note, we'll have the flexibility to bring up Rendon and Goodwin in 2013.

We'll also be worse.

He failed once. Maybe he thinks he'll get him this time.

Cheaper payroll = More money in the pockets of the Lerners

(Image removed from quote.)

But they said that once they had the core team in place that they'd start spending money, how will we ever trust them if they cut payroll?

Once they get the MASN deal, the ballpark naming rights, and the spring training site locked down they'll have more money to spend.  Also, don't forget that the Lerners have capped season ticket sales at 20K, which will obviously affect their cash flow.

Boz argues the Nats are more inclined to pay Desmond and J-Zimm while reserving enough to pay Strasburg then go out and over-pay for free agents who are seeking long-term deals.

Except for Werth, that's been Rizzo's approach for the last few years now.  If only we can grab LaRoche for 2 years or find another similar player on the open market.

I guess the real question is "who can we trade for?"  Is there another Gio out there that we can get for Rendon, Rosenbaum, and Hood?

In the new TV market we won't get LaRoche or anyone remotely comparable for a bargain price. As always, the price for a free agent will be more than the other 29 teams are willing to pay, one good year doesn't mean players are going to take less money to come here.

Boz wrote that we don't need free agents because we've got good guys in the system already, trading them would counter his proposed plan.

Salaries are about to spike, staying on the sidelines means taking a step back at a time when this team should be gunning for a World Series like there is no next season.

But the Nats aren't supposed to compete until 2013.

Oh. Wait.

Me too. But it's more likely Rizzo is wrong and Boswell is shilling.

we have this same discussion every year at this time.  If over-paying for free agents on the downside of their career = championships, the Angels would have played the Marlins last year in the WS.

I just finished the Boswell column and I'm almost nauseous.  There are so many things wrong, almost offensive, in it.

My feelings about Boswell are mixed but this line of thinking is incredibly ill-conceived, stupid even.  Do nothing and you'll end up where you were last year.  Correction, it's not do nothing, it's do less.  Have a lesser roster and you end up where you were last season.  Replace Jackson with a "back of the rotation  starter".  "Grab a lefty reliever"  to replace Burnett and Gonzalez.  There are about 10 of them, Boswell says.

Aside from the fact that just picking up scraps is going to make the roster weaker, other teams are getting better.  MOST other teams are getting better or at least they're trying to get better.

This is incredibly bad, Loriaesque, almost.

It's November.  And they won 98 games last year with a very young team.  Innings-limited Strasburg.  19 year old Harper.  Just with those two alone, they should be better.

And I don't think Moore is a bad player.  For that matter, I think Corey Brown is a decent player - maybe Josh Reddick-like with power, speed, and strikeouts.  Moore and Morse, if both play a full season, will put up at least as good numbers offensively as Morse and LaRoche put up last year.

I believe that Boswell's article was intended for an audience of one, Adam LaRoche.

Standing pat this off season would just be god awful.  Sign everyone or fire Rizzo.

Rizzo doesn't set the budget or the long term road map, he does a fine job of working within the constraints set by ownership.

I don't really mind standing pat on offense if they are that high on Moore, but if they make that decision they should upgrade both the bullpen and attempt to replace/upgrade over E-Jax.
