Kobernus is early, but he sounds like he's got a great skill set.  I'll take two more Kobernuses if Rizzo can't get what he wants at the deadline.

WTF, Kobernus has sucked so far.

Kobernus, really? Isn't that a little early?

Indeed. Kobernus hasn't shown anything as of yet... but thankfully Casey Blake v.2 still has plenty of time in his career to show us what he can do.

Also, on the Garko deal, as an Indians fan, I'm very excited to see what Shapiro has done these past few weeks. He's been trading off players for young hard throwers... something the organization has had trouble developing over the years.

While Barnes doesn't throw hard... he certainly knows how to pitch and could be a pretty fast mover through the system. As another poster said, the Giants farm system is just stocked with pitching and Barnes was their ninth best prospect coming into the year according to BA.

Kobernus got off to a brutal start, but was starting to come on before he hurt his knee.  He's also nothing like Blake.  He's a leadoff hitter with pop that plays very well at 2B.

This is a scouting report from the very first post in the Kobernus draft thread

Quote
Round 2, Jeffrey Kobernus, 2B, University of California-Berkeley:
Often compared to Dodgers infielder Casey Blake, Kobernus is a hard-nosed infielder with speed who hit at a .341 (74-for-217) clip as a junior at the University of California-Berkeley. He ranked second in the Pac-10 with 20 stolen bases. In his three seasons with the Bears, he hit .324 with 12 homers, 89 RBIs and 44 stolen bases in 161 contests.

That's an awful comparison.  Blake is a 3b/corner OF and Kobernus is a middle infielder top of the order type.  The only comparison I can see is both are willing to play multiple positions and have some power.  Kobernus is certainly nowhere near a Casey Blake V.2

As far as I can tell, Blake has only had one game in the middle infield, I'm wondering how he is like blake?

Garko to Giants

Red Sox got LaRoche, is anyone else looking for a 1b, or did we blow another opportunity to trade a guy with an expiring contract?

we blew it. as usual.

the Nationals always go into the trade deadline with a ton of tradeable parts, and we never trade them because they are all average, non-superstars...solid contributors but not big names.  and we always ask for all 5 of every team's top prospects along with 30 million dollars and their first born, for a single one of our non-superstar players.

this franchise has never, ever, been even remotely interested in really making significant deals at the trade deadline.  I'm amazed that the Morgan/Burnett trade actually happened.

The Rauch trade was peculiar. Bonifacio I don't think is a major league regular, but  we were able to spin it into Willingham when FLA did its salary dump.

We can usually pull off the smaller trades, but I can't remember any big expiring contract ones. Maybe there is an orginizational philosophy of taking the picks?

I really think our #1 goal for the rest of the year should be subliminally convincing Jeffrey Loria that Hanley Ramirez costs too much.

Exactly. So if we get him in a trade, we have him for years!

Scrolling through SoSH, someone picked up that Carlos Carrasco was scratched from his Iron Pigs start and that Lou Marson and Jason Donald are out of the line up.  It's Lee, not Halladay, per ESPN.

Pirates and Mariners make a 7 player deal.  M's get Jack Wilson and Ian Snell.  Bucs get Jeff Clement, Ronny Cedeno and three minor leagers.

They must really have given up on Clement and their 2008 third and fifth rounders, both of whom look like they are doing well

Seattle is creeping up there as one of the easiest organizations to fleece in a trade.

Clement could be a star for Pitt. I have a feeling either he or Doumit moves over to 1B within the next few days.

Clement has not played much catcher this year.   He was never defensively strong. That may have scared off teams looking for a catcher. First abse looks likely.

So, here's what I want to know, how do these teams negotiate with each other and still leak the stories to ALL these media outlets that are providing details of the negotiations or are saying the deals are close?

They must have a designated leaker. Or maybe they call people while they're in the bathroom.

"Get me Ken Rosenthal ... hey, Ruben here, I'm taking a dump right now but we're about to land Cliff Lee. Yeah. Not telling you who. Looking pretty close. Hold on, I gotta wipe my anus."

Lee to Phils is done:

The Phillies have reached agreement with the Indians on a trade that would bring them left-hander Cliff Lee and outfielder Ben Francisco for Class A right-hander Jason Knapp, Class AAA right-hander Carlos Carrasco, shortstop Jason Donald and catcher Lou Marson, according to major-league sources.
