it's his first start in AA. new stadiums, new environment, new team. apparently the first run was unearned too.

this is may all be true, but it doesn't change the fact that he has run into these same problems before.  His problem is he is too inconsistent.  I want him to succeed, but it doesn't seem like he will in the starters role.  The first run was unearned, but part of the problem was his throw to Rhinehart at first was wild (on both of them).  He has also been getting knocked around, with a few balls just barely missing leaving the park.

Tom Milone ends with an encouraging line

5.1 IP, 3 H, 0 ER, 1 BB, 4 SO

He is a guy with impeccable control AND command.  At most, he will walk one guy a game and as long as he has solid defense behind him he won't give up many hits or runs.  He won't improve very much as he has pretty much reached his ceiling, but he is going to be a very reliable minor league rotation guy.  Maybe he will be a decent back end of the rotation major leaguer one day.

I don't know about you guys but I'll take this line from Detwiler tonight: 5 IP 5 H 2 R 1 ER 2 BB 4 K.

Keep in mind that the defense behind him committed 3 errors while he was pitching. Sure it wasn't a perfect performance but to me it is an encouraging start.

Yeah he is a pretty soft thrower, I'm not exactly sure what his average speed is, but I know it isn't very hard.

I found it interesting P. Arnold pitched out the pen tonight...I hope they're not already converting him to a reliever...

They are just using him there until some rotation spots free up with call-ups and the beginning of short season.  I believe the Nationals still want to use him as a starter, but there just isn't any room.  They would rather him get some innings in than have him diddle around at extended spring training.

K that definitely makes sense...Curran & Jones are having disapointing dayviews so far hopefully they can step it up and get that Hagerstown Sun offense going

Anderson Hernandez goes 0/4 in his first AAA rehab assignment.

Maxwell hit a 3-run Jack. Marco Estrada started and was so-so: 4.2 IP 4 H 3 R 3 ER 2 BB 5 K.

Garrett Mock walked 3 batters and gave up 3 runs without recording an out. discouraging.

Potomac loses 5-1.

Marrero went 1/4 with a single to extend his hitting streak to 4 games to start the season.

King went 2/4 with 2 singles and a run.

Burgess continues to struggle mightily. He's 0/13 with 3 Ks in his last 3 games.

Hagerstown won 9-2 to improve to 3-1 on the season.

Souza went 2/4 with 2 RBIs and a walk.

Norris went 1/4 with a Single, Run, RBI, and Walk.

Osvaldo Rodriguez pitched 2 scoreless innings in relief: 2 IP 1 H 0 R 0 ER 1 BB 3 K.

Listened to the P-Nats game tonight against the Salem Red Sox.  It rained for most of the game, but they kept playing anyway.

-  The P-Nats led off the game with 5 runs on 6 hits.  Michael Burgess knocked out a 2-run homer, to drive in Dan Lyons who had walked to lead off the inning.  Stephen King, Jesus Valdez, and Francisco Plasencia then had hits.  Valdez drove in King, who had doubled.  Sean Rooney then drove in Valdez and Plasencia.

-  The hitters then went cold until the 6th.  They got a runner to third (Valdez) and one at first (Plasencia), finally after a long drought of no runners.  Then something bizarre happened.  They tried for a double steal/suicide squeeze that failed miserably when Sean Rooney bunted the down the third base line so he could easily tag Valdez the thief.  Plasencia was almost out at second as well.  If that wasn't enough, Plasencia was then sent to third on a steal during the very next at-bat and was caught.  Horrible sequence of events, Trent Jewett gets responsibility for the calls.

-  Brad Meyers had an OK game, nothing special.  Let up 3 earned runs.  It was Martin Beno that blew the lead, though.  His control is a major issue, and SF may be right.  He probably won't amount to anything.  Kyle Gunderson, one of the heros of last season's championship series, had a good 1.2 IP of relief.  Jamie Lehman then came in to finish the game, but ran into some troubles in the 9th inning.  He held on for the save.

-  Sean Rooney had some issues behind the plate today.  He let a bunch of balls by, messed on a play at home that allowed a runner to score, and then had a throwing error.  He isn't the regular catcher, though, that job belongs to Brian Peacock.

P-Nats now 2-4.  Will Atwood on the mound tomorrow for game 2 of the series with the Salem Red Sox.

No mention of Marrero? wtf?

He blasted his 2nd HR tonight and has hit safely in all 5 games this season for Potomac! :pimp:

He's on the road to stardom.

Oops, I had edited my post and deleted that by accident.  The 8th inning was huge for P-Nats lineup.  The P-Nats announcer actually called his home run right before he hit it.  Right as he was saying "Marrero is set up for a HR right here..." he hit a line drive that just stayed fair by a hair and just barely got over the wall.  Valdez was then hit by the pitcher and had thoughts about charging the mound, but the umpire got in his way.  He was then removed from the game for speedster Boomer Whiting, who created a run with his speed, helped along by a Stephen King double.  King and Marrero both now have 3 multi-hit games.  I highly doubt either lasts at A+ very long this season.

Espinosa was the only starter without a hit today.

Man Atilano got bombed in his AA debut: 3.1 IP 11 H 5 R 5 ER 1 BB 3 K. damn.

I'm getting cised for Josh Wilkie though. He pitched 1.2 scoreless and got 3 Ks.

ZZ top pitched a scoreless frame too.

Good news about Marrero.  He'll be up in AA-Harrisburg within a month, I'm sure (maybe Burgess too if he has a solid April).  Hopefully Marrero is on the fast track and can take over Nick Johnson's spot.

Today's Match-Ups (4/14/09)

AAA: [7:05 PM] Syracuse (1-4) Jordan Zimmermann @ Lehigh Valley (1-4) Kyle Kendrick
AA: [7:05 PM] Harrisburg (1-3) Michael O'Conner @ Trenton (2-2) Eric Hacker
A+: [7:05 PM] Potomac (2-3) Will Atwood* @ Salem (2-3) Kyle Weiland
A:   [6:35 PM] Hagerstown (3-2) Brad Peacock vs Delmarva (4-1) Richard Zagone

* It should be Erik Arnesen's turn to go tonight for Potomac, but the P-Nats announcer said at the end of the game that it would be Will Atwood.  I guess we will see if he made a mistake.

-  Potomac should have an easy time against Weiland, who got knocked around in his last start.  Chris Marrero and Francisco Plasencia have hit in the all the games they have played in and have hitting streaks of 5 and 4, accordingly.

- Other hitting streaks include:  Ronnie Labrie (4), Seth Bynum (4), Corey Patterson (4)
