Ambrose Burnside.  John Bell Hood.  It is close.  Hood had moments of competence, but his defense of ATL got Lincoln reelected and his campaign at Franklin and Nashville was ridiculous.

Ooh, that's a tough one. John Bell Hood was far, far too audacious for his own good, and at Nashville especially showed not a whit of tactical capability. Burnside's sin ran in the opposite direction, namely having the creativity of a rock. Hood did have the misfortune of coming up against two of the best generals of the war, Sherman and Thomas, and being hugely outnumbered in Tennessee; Burnside did too, of course, (Robert E. Lee!) but he was so stupid Lee could just sit there and wait for everyone to die in front of the sunken road.

The thing about Burnside was that Fredericksburg was not his only mess up. He was late getting started at Antietam and insisted on sending his troops over a sighted in bridge or the creek when it was fordable elsewhere.  I think a company or two of sharpshooters held off several regiments there.  Then, of course, there was the Crater, although on that one, Meade (I think) and Burnside's superiors messed Burnside up because they did not think the plan could possibly work, so they pulled his best troops.  I forget Spotsylvania Courthouse - I know he was there and don't remember a big mess up.

How many years (already have the posts volumes), for each? Just interested on who the founding members were of this board, and how many are still active. I am interested in the history of the Board, and why it was formed separate for the Washington Nationals Message Board......
It would be interesting to have a separate section, just like the "Help" and "New Members" section, to have a "History" Section, on the WNFF - fan forum. Why it was formed -who were the founding members, etc.....just a thought.....and maybe have a WNFF Hall of Fame....

I made the board because I thought the MLB board was ugly and unintuitive.  And also because I was bored and felt like it.  Then I went over to the MLB board and said "hey guys, come check it out" and the rest is history.

Some have made that claim, I have no idea if there's any truth to it.

If you include JMad (he's not there because he changed accounts) I'm 25th and if you take out the ones who hardly ever posted or who have been gone for a long time I'm 6th in "seniority".

Little Mac was never as good as (a) Big Mac. Indeed, he was downright horrible. George Thomas was a rock. And Nate Green (from an earlier conflagration) was probably the best. Chamberlain was my favorite, however.
The one good thing about Burnside was he had a realistic view of his (in)adequacies. Unfortunately he was put in charge by superiors when he himself felt he was not the right choice. And for sheer perseverance, no one exceeds Grant.

Bally should do a tribute 'stache in 2013 in honor of Little Roundtop.
