Mike Auldridge, dobro player for Seldom Scene, dies at 73

Anyone who ever heard the Seldom Scene during its decades as the "house band" of the Birchmere, knows what a virtuoso dobro master Mike was.  Has anyone ever played it better?  Certainly his peers, musicians around the world, knew of Mike's work and he got a lot of session work out of it, but my memories of Mike are onstage with Duffey, Eldridge, Starling and Gray, or later incarnations of the Scene.  Mike recorded with Linda Ronstadt, Lyle Lovett, and Emmylou Harris among many others.

He was also a gifted accompanying singer, never solo but blending seamlessly with Duffey and Starling or other vocalists to make the Scene's unique vocal styles.  Seemed like a genuinely nice guy, too bad he won't be heard again. 

He was a DC area native, from Kensington, MD.

I think I saw the Seldom Scene a few times at the original Birchmere.   I know I saw Redbone there a few times.   Or, so I'm told.        First time I heard their music was when I worked in Bethesda.    There was a bluegrass show on with Thor.    BTW,  That is a great write up by Eric Brace.

The band currently includes longtime member Ben Eldridge, and also a frequent member Lou Reid.  Worth seeing but not quite what they once were.
