That was not a good time for O'Connor. It's his second relief appearance all year and Manny puts him in with the bases loaded in the 8th inning. That's just not good managing.
And he had to face a hitter who has a career line of .318/.391/.498 vs. lefties, no less.

ACTAvation - yep, I think the Cubs have really blown up their bench this inning. In fact, Gameday tells me their only remaining hitter is Felix Pie.
Yeah, Carpenter just mentioned how they used 4/5 of their bench hitters on two batting spots.

Welcome to the bigs? I dunno.

Okay, Nats got lucky. That could have been ugly.

Very nice job by Saul there. If we win, someone might have to share the MVP w/ him.

Good work by Saul.  Why he couldn't have just started the inning in the first place is beyond me.  Put him on a short leash and bring in someone else if he struggles, but damn, don't overwork Ayala there.

Piniella just wasted two PHers to get the match-up he wants. I guess he thinks this won't be going into extras.
Yep. The Cubs have one hitter left on their bench - Felix Pie. We have three pitchers, Rauch, Colome, and Hanrahan; we also have Belliard and Boone. They do have their whole bullpen left.

* breathes HUGE sigh of relief *

terrible managing by manny there. first walking soto who has looked CLUELESS at the plate to load the bases. then, putting a noob like o'connor into a pressure packed situation like that. smh. o'connor  couldn't find the plate to save his life.

THANK YOU SAUL FOR SAVING US!

Oh great, MASN reminds us that it's Chico vs. Zambrano tomorrow.  If the Nats can't pull off a win tonight, the Cubs have this series in the bag.

We have a bunch of one-and-done relievers. I guess O'Connor is supposed to be our long reliever now, which makes the move to put him in there w/ the bases loaded in the 8th even more of a head scratcher.

Marmol is a beast.

96 K in 69.3 innings last season.

Ayala's the typical one-and-done reliever.  This is only his second year back from major arm surgery.  Before 2006, he was overworked by Frank Robinson in '04 and '05.  He's our last reliever that I'd try to keep on for a second inning if he couldn't get out the lead-off man.

Marmol is filthy.  I'll be amazed if the Nats can do anything here.

Ryan Zimmerman with a 3-1 count...Ryan Zimmerman with a walk.

My jaw just dropped.  Mind you, this was against a real big-league pitcher in Marmol, not some Burke Badenhop scrub.

Wow, NJ looked totally over-matched there.  Seldom do you see him take such bad swings and just look foolish like that.

This should hopefully be Marmol's last inning.  If this becomes a war of attrition, it could favor the Nats.

Rauch needs to turn back into the old Rauch this inning.

Walk for Milledge. Don't know what Boone will do here ... there are 2 outs.

I agree with ACTAvation - a war of attrition favors us. They've burned their bench, but we've burned a good bit of our bullpen. I still like our odds.

If I'm expecting extra innings, I leave in Rivera...
