got mainline Ubuntu installed on my laptop now. it runs pretty smoothly, despite my specs. I'm surprised. only reason i was using Xubutu and looking at Lubuntu is because I thought the regular Ubuntu wouldn't run on this machine.

definitely taking OpenOffice.org off though. I don't need all that, I'll just install Abiword/Gnumeric instead and that should be sufficient for what I do.

considering actually using the Evolution email client (I normally just use GMail's webmail, but apparently offline doesn't work in the Linux version of Chrome. thoughts?  also thoughts on Evolution vs Claws Mail?

Jebus, the OpenOffice.org that was installed with Ubuntu is 340mb.  that's like half of the install disc. :rofl:

Don't go crazy with the distro included software. Mozilla Thunderbird is open source-y enough and is really great. I hate Evolution.

well, I'm using Claws Mail instead of Evolution. but for some reason I can't uninstall evolution without screwing up my interface. i did, and ubuntu wouldnt boot correctly. i re-installed evolution and everything went back to normal.

evolution is the internet explorer of GNOME.

speaking of Claws Mail, I don't like how it does not render Html mail by default. you gotta install a plugin and the click a "show html" button in every email. very, very annoying.

if I could get the Gmail web interface on my desktop(with it set as the default mail client and offline acess), I would.

don't want thunderbird. my choice.

honestly I really don't even want an email "client". I just want my gmail available offline, GOD DAMMIT GOOGLE MAKE IT WORK ON LINUX!

This is one point where JMad and I agree.  I barely ever used email before Gmail came along.  It saved email for me.  Standalone clients seem so archaic to me now.  As clients go, I like Thunderbird, but I much prefer not to have one at all.

I get it. But some of those open source Linux apps like Kword and Claws Mail are just clutter to me. If you want a mail client that just plain works offline, you could IMAP to your GMail with Thunderbird and not use a plugin for basic html.

There was webmail way before gmail, but somehow google just got it "right".

The only mail client I use now is on my JesusPhone.  And that's really just because i get push email with it.

If it's like the other "buntus" you should just be able to hit the "Print Screen" (might also be "PrtScn") key, after which a prompt will come up asking you where to save the file.

Rhythmbox with space for the upcoming Ubuntu One Music Store.


Updated MeMenu, with apparent support for IM and Social Networking. If you type in the box and press enter, it posts to your Facebook/Twitter/whatever Social Network(s) you set.


The full Social Network integration. I've only got Twitter set, but you can do Facebook, Flickr, and a bunch of other stuff too.

as you notice, the close/minimize/maximize buttons were moved to the left. and lots of people are nagging about it.

supposedly they've got something in mind for the right side of the windows for 10.10, but nobody knows what.

As a Mac user, I don't mind them on that side, but they are in the wrong order.  Close should be in the corner.
