Chief - I'm curious about your tracking of runs by game each season.

It seems that, since LaRoche and Zimmerman came back, the power across the board has jumped.  I recall, maybe not correctly, a pretty sickly SLG for the team (must be buried up thread).  Now it is up .384, which is 19th in baseball and 8th in the NL.  For just May, it is .467 and 2d in the NL.  Our wRC+ (OK, it is a fancy stat for runs created by offense relative to league averages) is 17% above average (117), again 2d in the NL for May.

We had tons of arguments over the offseason and in April about the offense's weakness, and I had some pretty optimistic views about how the offense would look when folks were healthy, with normal progress in careers, and reverting to normal career paths after off years last year.  That said, I never figured that the offense would perform as well as it has in May with the injuries to Werth, Morse still being out, and now Ramos down.

A bit of credit to Rizzo for some of the bench signings. Tracy has been a surprise, Ankiel has done his job well, Lombo leaves us crying for more (not a signing, but in the majors because we did not sign additional FAs), and even Nady has started to come around.  I realize it is only 2+ weeks of strong offense, but if it is legit to be in the dumps about how bad things were for the first 3 weeks, then it is legit to be a bit positive about the recent run.

Of course, I recognize that life in a trash can naturally leads one to go in the dumps

4 out of the last 6 games the Nats have scored 6 or more runs. Good trend. Perhaps the bats are waking up?

A lineup of

Lombo
Werth
Zimmerman
LaRoche
Morse
Harper
Desmond
Flores

Would look pretty damn good.

Desmond
Werth
Zimmerman
LaRoche
Morse
Harper
Espinosa
Flores

Won't be so bad, either.

Not if he takes his hat off. He's thinning big time.
True. Danny Espinosa probably gets carded all the time when he's clean shaven

Ian Desmond's .456 SLG is almost 100 points ahead of last year, he has 6 HRs compared to 8 last year as well.  He's definitely not a lead-off hitter (.296 OBP) but he's also not an offensive liability so far this year.

Among all shortstops he's:
9th in average (3rd NL)
17th in OBP (7th NL)
7th in SLG (3rd NL)
9th in OPS (3rd NL)

To heck with that.  Try Werth leadoff and Harper 2d, with Lombo 9th in sort of a 2d leadoff role. Werth and Harper have similar OBP to Lombo with more pop.  Get your 5 best all around hitters the most PAs.  Then go with some Desi SLG right behind them.

I'm guessing none of that graph came through :)

Main point is that we've come on in May.  We were 14 runs behind 2011 after 24 games, now we are 2.  We were 2 ahead of 2007, now we are 21 ahead.  We were 13 behind 2008,  now we are 11

Just a guess - end of the season, we are behind 2009, close to 2010, and the 3rd best offense as the Nats.

Lombo
Werth
Zim
LaRoche
Morse
Desmond
Harper
Flores

Minor change:

Lombo
Haprer
Zim
LaRoche
Morse
Werth
Desmond
Flores

Harper's speed makes him a better #2, and Werth > Desmond.

woudln't object to switching Harper and Werth based on Lefty or righty starting to get an extra PA with a platoon advantage.

He's more of a corner OF, and we didn't really have a need for that during the off-season... unless we were going to dump Laroche. Not sure how we could have matched up with the Sox anyway.

He's having a great year, though.

But Werth won't be as strong until next year

So I'd go with
Lombo
Desmond
Harper
Zimm
LaRoache
Morse
Werth
Flores

Minor change:

Lombo
Haprer
Zim
LaRoche
Morse
Werth
Desmond
Flores

Harper's speed makes him a better #2, and Werth > Desmond.

Kev - the Red sox traded Reddick and maybe a minor league position player and arm for Bailey and Sweeney.  We could have sent Clippard and perhaps an infielder like Lombo (who was behind Desi and Espinosa at the time) for an equivalent offer.  I'm kind of glad the Nats did not make the move, although Reddick would have played CF for the Nats.

Thoughts on Lind? If he clears waivers, worth a pickup?

Lind is a marginal first baseman

What about maybe playing Desmond in LF? Defensively he's been okay, but he's been saved a couple errors by LaRoche being the picking machine. Desi's bat would play in LF. His arm would be an asset. He's got the speed for it. Espinosa moves back to short and Lombo plays 2nd. We have a very good defensive infield.

Not sure what we could do when Morse gets back so maybe it's not worth the effort. But we could play Morse in RF, Desi in LF and Harper in CF. Ankiel and Bernadina could come off the bench as defensive replacements

what is up with Rick Ankiel lately?  He started the season off fairly well actually, but since May 5th, he has been terrible.  He seems to be swinging and missing a lot, and he is chasing a whole lot of breaking stuff in the dirt.  Rick kind of reminds me of Espinosa a few weeks ago with how clueless some of his plate appearances are.
