Chief - I'm curious about your tracking of runs by game each season.
It seems that, since LaRoche and Zimmerman came back, the power across the board has jumped. I recall, maybe not correctly, a pretty sickly SLG for the team (must be buried up thread). Now it is up .384, which is 19th in baseball and 8th in the NL. For just May, it is .467 and 2d in the NL. Our wRC+ (OK, it is a fancy stat for runs created by offense relative to league averages) is 17% above average (117), again 2d in the NL for May.
We had tons of arguments over the offseason and in April about the offense's weakness, and I had some pretty optimistic views about how the offense would look when folks were healthy, with normal progress in careers, and reverting to normal career paths after off years last year. That said, I never figured that the offense would perform as well as it has in May with the injuries to Werth, Morse still being out, and now Ramos down.
A bit of credit to Rizzo for some of the bench signings. Tracy has been a surprise, Ankiel has done his job well, Lombo leaves us crying for more (not a signing, but in the majors because we did not sign additional FAs), and even Nady has started to come around. I realize it is only 2+ weeks of strong offense, but if it is legit to be in the dumps about how bad things were for the first 3 weeks, then it is legit to be a bit positive about the recent run.
Of course, I recognize that life in a trash can naturally leads one to go in the dumps
