if we were to draft (and sign) Harper...would you consider him a prospect at catcher or RF?  I know he's a great catcher, but we need help in RF and with Norris, we could be in good shape in the future if we have both of them in the system.

Actually he hit three homers yesterday.  Two were in the same inning.  The box scores aren't up yet, but in four games he went 7-for-13 with at least four walks, three homers, and eight RBIs.  I have his BA at .437.  He's only two homers from tying the school record.

Haha baseballs ridiculous. You're not allowed to have even a little bit of swagger. I remember when Dukes hit his walkoff last season and did the chest pump to the crowd and people were all upset. C'mon let the players be flamboyant and create rivals instead of acting like robots just doing a job and getting a paycheck.

Or Robuts.

How did you find that out? I couldn't find their box score anywhere.

Various sources.  Hopefully, CSN will update their site soon.

The info was slightly off.  He was 7-for-14 and hit four homers.  His Ba is .431, his OBP% is .528 and his SLg% is .931.  In both DHs, he played catcher in game 1 and CF in game 2.

So, if we put him in the OF, who does him compare to?

I'm starting to get really excited about this guy. Hard to believe I'm older than him and he's in college doing all this stuff.

If we draft him, how long could we lock him up before he ran to the Yankees?

Depending on how long it takes for him to get to the majors, anywhere from 6-11 years with 7-8 being the most likely.  A player signed under the age of 19 can be on minor league rosters for 5 years without being placed on the 40-man before being eligible for the Rule V draft, but early first round picks are starting to get more major league contracts.  This means that they are immediately placed on the 40-man and use an option year each season they are in the minors.  Each player has three option years and after that they have to be placed on the 25-man roster or placed through waivers.  Once at the MLB level, teams get 6 years of control until free agency.

None that I can remember, but Harper won't be fresh out of HS.

True. It still seems like a bad decision to press such a young kid onto a three year path for the majors.

I can't say I disagree, but it is likely to happen with Boras at the helm.

I said that earlier in the thread. I hope we stall him somewhere like AA and let his maturity catch up with his ability. He's been moving 100 miles an hour his whole baseball career. We should let him one year just slow down so he can catch his breath.

In a vacuum.  But there are those phenoms who can do it .  I don't know if he is one of them or not.  Time will tell.

I agree, it would probably be good for him to have at least a year there, but if he is the bill of goods that he's being reported to being, that's all he'll likely need.

From FederalBaseball:

Quote
• In a four-game sweep of the College of Eastern Utah this weekend, College of Southern Nevada catcher Bryce Harper was a combined 7 for 14 with 7 runs scored, 4 walks, 4 HR's and 8 RBI's as the CSN Coyotes improved to 27-5 on the season, while Harper, the 17-year-old presumptive top pick in the 2010 MLB First-Year Player Draft, ended the weekend with a .431 AVG (44 for 102), 39 R, 13 doubles, 1 triple, 12 HR's and 35 RBI's in 31 games over which he's K'd 21 times and drawn 22 walks with a .528 OBP, a .931 SLG and .987 fld%, with 2 errors this season...How can the Nationals not pick Bryce Harper?

Bryce is doing everything right to make his case as the #1 pick.  It's his to loose at this point.  The only things I can imagine making him NOT the #1 pick would be: disease, car wreck and then alien abduction (all three, in that order).

There simply isn't juicier fruit on the HS/college baseball tree right now.

True.

Even if Rizzo and company want to add another college arm, it'd be hard to pass on Harper considering the stats he's putting up right now.

If we pass on Bryce Harper, I'll simply give up even though we have Strasburg. Bryce Harper has the potential to be one of the great ones of all time as a hitter. It's a medium risk, ultra high reward scenario. You could argue if we draft him that by 2014 or 2015 we may have the best pitcher and best hitter in the game. JUCO isn't something to brag about, but he is doing extraordinary thing in an odd situation at the age of 17. Any money we spend on him will be more than made up by what we make off of him getting us on ESPN and filling up the park.

It's not just juco, it is one of the best jucos in the country playing high level competition.  if this were bunker hill community college (where Robin Williams taught in Goodwill Hunting), then I'd take the stats with a lot of salt.  If he's a bust, he's BJ Surhoff (OK, BJ was doing it against an even higher level, but I'm giving the kid some likelihood of improving through his tean age years).
