Congrats Minty!

Thank you to all of those who wore the uniform to serve and protect us! That includes the brave firemen, policemen and EMTs that rushed to the aid of those in need on that fateful day and every other time they are needed. God Bless!

I was working at the USDA building on the mall and remember meeting 2IPAs coming from L'Fant Plaza once the government closed.  We decided it appeared Metro was closed and we had to walk home.  So we headed for Pennsylvania Ave where we hoped to get to the Key Bridge.  There appeared to be people going into the subway at Federal Triangle, so we went in there.  People squeezed into the subway cars with precision like the Marines.  Everybody was helping each other as we all tried to get home to what we thought would be safety.  The subway ride was really amazing.

That's really crazy but cool.

I remember being in elementary school in Montreal, Canada when the teacher whispering started. The students were then informed about the attacks and we held a moment of silence. I remember my parents picking me up from school (we lived just a few blocks away - so this NEVER happened on a regular school day) and I asked my parents if my grandfather was working at either the WTC or the Pentagon, which was a no. Had some moments of silence at school the next day. It was all very confusing and saddening (I remember my younger brother just crying and crying...).

The September 11 exhibit at the Newseum in DC is great, and I highly recommend it. I visited it last summer when we saw that AAA let us get in at a discount. While I obviously knew about the incident I did not live in the US during the aftermath. It was hard to hold back tears after seeing footage of the attack, of the reporters and citizens fleeing and documenting what was happening. I had never seen any footage of the attack so I was just shocked.

Anyways, thank you to all the servicemen and women who served then and continue to serve now. We appreciate and are blessed by your support. And I pray for any of the victims and anyone affected by those attacks.

Thanks for the post CALSGR8

I'll never forget this day. The plane flying into the 2nd tower will forever be burned in my mind. One of the biggest reasons I wanted to join the military. Sorry to anyone who lost friends/family that day and thanks to all the first responders and the military.

Yeah, what a freaky day. Woken up being told that a plane crashed into the WTC, then watching as another flies in. Living in Arlington I actually was outside and saw the plane that crashed into the Pentagon fly over my house. I knew right away what it was. I'd been following the Taliban after they blew up those two centuries old Buddha statues. I'd been likewise informed about their assassination of the Northern Alliance leader days prior, so it was pretty obvious.

But it's amazing to think adults that are 18 were barely in elementary school when it happened. No one that wasn't around or old enough can ever understand that day, and the unity that emerged from it. You think, well, it was another Pearl Harbor. But WWII was going on, it wasn't totally out of the blue. Most importantly you didn't have TV watching the attacks unfold. Here, it was insane. No idea if some nation was invading, or what the hell was behind it for most folks. The Clinton years, hell, since the fall of the USSR, for the first time in generations there was no threat. Went to sleep the tenth, woke up to the apocalypse.

I think the biggest thing is the aftermath. Living in this area, near DC. There was before and after 9/11. 60 years from now things will never again be like they were before it. Security checks, every federal building being the next thing to a DMZ. Most of the country, aside from air travel, things went back to normal. Conflicts in Afghanistan and Iraq aside. But here, there'll never be a return to the freedom/look at a federal building funny and have rifles trained on you in seconds like before 9/11. Such a turning point, such a sad day. But the worst thing is that you've now got people who were too young to remember before 9/11 that are adults. Same way that I'm 28 and don't remember the cold war/before the fall of the USSR. Eleven years on, I think what this day represents most now is how fast time moves by and how short our lives truly are.

Whiny introspection over.

Sept 11 is my Pearl Harbor.  I was working at the Navy Yard at the time but had coworkers who worked at the Pentagon.  I was home waiting for Terminex.  I was watching the Today show and saw the first plane fly into the WTC.  I thought the Pilot had a heat attack or something.   Saw the second plane and couldn't believe my eyes.  Huh?  What's going on?  TERMINEX comes; sprays around.  I pay for the service with a credit card.  The service person cant call the credit card in.  I get a dialtone but cant get thru.   I look up and see the Pentagon.  My reaction is panic.  I mean seeing Ny was surreal but that was THERE!  Pentagon was here and all of a sudden my mind is racing.  My friends and coworkers installed computers for the Navy.  Were they in that section.?    The service person finally gets thru and leaves.  I cant get my eyes away from the Tv.

My mom calls.  My cousin who grew up in NY had called her in tears asking if I was Ok.  He didn't know I was home.  Since I was having outgoing phone problems she called him back.  My friend called in tears to see if I was ok.  I called work.  Everyone was accounted for.

I come to find out my coworkers were supposed to be in that section but were told to come back later.  The LCDR we worked with perished that day.  Ayoung military shopkeeper who had picked up computers perished also.  Another person who I had delivered computers to and was moving to the WNY.   He sees me and gives me a hug.  Happy to be alive.

Eventually in the days that follow. I'm assigned to the Pentagon.  Guards with huge guns now check my ID.  Its so weird and scary at the same time.  You feel guilty because you weren't there but at the same time a sense of comeraderie with everyone there.  Far away friends call and leave meg's on my phone.  I spend time calling each one back.

It was an unreal day.  I posted this thread so we can share and vent our experiences.  I gave money to the building of the Pentagon Memorial and got to attend its opening.

I think people struggle determining what is, or isn't, appropriate remembrance.  In the end there's a fair amount of diversity and some may seem over the top while others too reserved or non-existent.

I would probably tend towards the more reserved, muted end of the scale, for me it's a day of quiet remembrance.

There are enough of us in New York or the D.C. area directly or indirectly effected by the events of 9/11. I find it irksome when some moron soybean farmer from Rendville, Ohio tries express mock outrage and relays his meaningful experience with the television or radio or some Californian talking head discusses it as a pretext to demanding homeland security subsides. Clearly there was an impact on many countries as several foreign nationals were killed and the subsequent actions effected the entire nation if not the world but one more email from a coworker about the memory of how they were brushing their teeth in a Vegas hotel room while watching CNN and I am going to open a can of whoop ass.

Don't even get me started on people who use it as a excuse for their racism or jingoism.

I remember being in school when it happened,  my school drew heavily from new york,  so a lot of students where frantic,  people I know were insanely lucky,  my wife's father had been downsized a couple of years prior from an insurance firm that had its new york office wiped out in the tower collapses and my roommate's fathered was an American Airlines pilot who just happened to have an off day

The people behind 9/11 don't share your provincialism about America. They hate all of us, regardless of where we were on 9/11, and the attack was meant to be on us all.

Gods forbid we remember the actual victims, like the families of Cantor Fitzgerald, instead lets rely on hackneyed jingoisms and relating remembered interactions with the media spectacle.
