We ran out and bought a space heater, because my wife was concerned she might get cold if we lose power. We have a generator, but we don't hook up the heat to conserve energy.

Anyway, I figure everyone thought I was an idiot buying an electric space heater when we're going to lose power.

I'm screwed when the power goes out. Going to lose a ton of food. Hoping for the best.

Not sure how the power will hold up at my place but you're more than welcome to haul your food over here if yours goes and mine doesn't.  My fridge is always nearly empty

This update scares me.

 fantastic, and I just heard from a neighbor in my housing development (UMD's Courtyards) that last time the power went out - after that freak storm in late June - that they were out of power for 5 days. Thankfully I picked up candles at Ikea a while ago and I can use them (safely! I promise I won't burn my apartment down) when I need to at night to entertain myself. Thankfully I have a decent amount of non-electronic hobbies if it comes down to that.

But make sure to pull everything off your deck if you haven't already! Especially before Monday night.

I bungied it all down.    I figure if the wind is that strong to blow it off, I'm doomed anyway.

Smart man. I just have a not so fond memory of watching our gazebo, made of metal and tied down to our deck, crunch like a soda can right in front of our eyes during hurricane Katrina! It was pretty dramatic. Just twisted from 9 feet tall down to 4 or 3 in a flash...

A few years ago we had a blowing storm.   I went out the next morning and there were cushions on my lounges.   I asked the wife where she got 'em.   Turns out, they blew over from my neighbors (town house).

I went to Target in Arlington, the only candles they had left were scented candles and Catholic prayer candles. The prayer candles were cheaper.

My son did not understand why I had to rake up as many leaves as I had the energy for and put all of the stuff from the porch in the basement.

CWG has another update, there's a really good "what to expect" page on their site as well.  NWS now says peak winds of 70MPH in the D.C. area over the next two days.

I found D batteries on my 6th store.  We're well set now.  Also, the Halloween stores have glow sticks which are useful as well.

Ah, if you're ever in Ikea then definitely swipe some. I got 100 small candles for $4 and they had a TON of them left in stock (these things : http://rhondapattonweddings.typepad.com/.a/6a00e5508cf2b4883301157020af6d970b-500wi ). They have candles in every size...

I have incredibly heavy tree cover. i use a version of this http://gutterstuff.com/guttering/ and it works great. Leaves still hang around on top of the gutters between heavy winds, but nothing gets past them, and they do not clog.

Wire screens don't work at all for me, but it's probably due to the type of leaf fall.

We have partial tree coverage around the house, but not as much as yours it sounds like.

Ordinary wire screens will catch leaves or other tree refuse but it takes a lot of jammage   to actually prevent water getting through.

You also cannot buy flood insurance in the DC area right now :bang:

Well duh, any insurance company selling it now is run by morons.

My roof is ridiculously high and steep and I have a middle house - when I get some extra cash I'm going to get something put up to cover my gutters.

It's all sold by the Federal government, the agents just act as a "storefront"

I do a lot of chores around the house myself, but going up multi-stories high to do gutter work isn't one of them.  That's when you pay someone.  If you have a townhouse, it should only cost you no more than $200 or so to do them.
