Is 2nd base an option for Zim?

Top 3 defensive 3B in the game doesn't get moved.

Rendon is not as good of a fielder as Zimm.

Zimm moving isn't a consideration unless his throwing shoulder issue gets significantly worse.  That's really the driver here.

If Rendon looks like a quick rising hitter, then it opens up Morse for the White Whale.  Both Morse and LaRoche are under team control for 2013 (Morse under contract, LaRoche with an option), so if White Whale is not signed as an FA next year or if we contend this year and Werth can't handle CF, Rendon may allow these guys to be moved for the White Whale.

I like it.

Harper, Whale (Fowler?), and Werth in the outfield
Zim, Desmond (or Lombo), Espinosa, and Rendon, in the infield.  Plus Ramos at catcher.

Leaves lots of money for extensions for JZ, Stras, and others.  Plus maybe enough for another pitcher.

I really don't care where Rendon plays long term as long as he gets up here quickly and desi is not the starting shortstop

Rendon. I sense that the guy will hit over .300 consistently...say, typical season of .325 with 20 or 25 homeruns. It can't hurt to lead off with a base-hit.

And I just don't see anybody else who ought to lead off. Werth has patience, but he struck out 160 times last year. Espinosa seems less patient, less mature, and also struck out 160 times. Desmond? No.

Strictly by batting eye, I might have Ramos lead off. Better a walk or a hit, even from a guy who can't steal second, than a strikeout.

While I tend to agree with you, can you imagine the amount of GIDP we would be dealing with? I agree that it'd be nice to have a runner on base, but he'll be a goner on anything that's not hit into the outfield.

We don't know that ...

OK then, the likelihood that Rendon is as good as or a better fielder at 3rd than Zimmy is slim at best. Zimmy is an elite defensive 3rd baseman and it would take a helluva talent to usurp him at third.

We don't know that ...

and we never will, you don't move an elite defender to a less important position defensively (ie Zimm to first) in the hopes that another guy may be better

The talk about Rendon gets me really excited. Imagine this lineup:

1. CF White Whale (Michael Bourn?)
2. 2B Rendon
3. 3B Zimmerman
4. RF Harper
5. 1B Morse
6. C Ramos
7. LF Werth/SS Espinosa(Not sure here)
8. Werth/Espinosa

That is a STACKED line up...

Werth would be a great number 8 hitter, but they'll  never hit him there.

I wouldn't mind seeing

1. CF Werth
2. 1b Rendon
3. 3b Zimmerman
4. RF Harper
5. LF Morse
6. C Ramos
7. 2b Espinosa
8. SS Desmond (still not convinced they don't see him as long term)
9. Pitcher

Last year he hit .281/.318/.412 when leading off. Of course, most of that was at the end of the season and we know how that goes

Even Steven Ean!  Mr. Steady State.  Write him in for his .317 BABIP and 1:3 BB%:K% year after year despite all the coaching and late season revelations that "he gets it this time!"

2 things:

1.   relatively small sample size.

2. that's still a crappy OBP for any hitter

I know. I've made this argument before

But compared to the rest of the hitters who hit leadoff, I'd take it.

that's the thing they don't have ANYONE that is an ideal option for leadoff hitter.

Yes, but imagine the loss of GDIP by moving Ramos away from the 6/7 spot.

How did he look at short?

He made a routine scoop and throw on the only play at him.
