Gordon Edes has some interesting mixed reporting and speculation related to both Morse and ALR.  If the Napoli deal falls apart (the focus of the link), we've all thought Boston would then look at ALR.  however, Boston has also been very careful not to give up a draft choice, give up high quality prospects in trade, or bind themselves to longer term contracts that could block players.  Were the Napoli deal to fall apart, Edes suggests the Red Sox may be more interested in Morse than ALR.
[note - this was before the Swisher signing by the Indians]

I've mentioned the surplus of lefty relievers they have - Miller, Breslow, and Franklin Morales - as part of a 10 pitchers into 7 slots bullpen.  I could easily see Morales for Morse after ALR signs with the Nats.

If the Sox deal with Napoli fell through, it would have fallen through by now.  That organization would have cut ties very quickly in order to spring on another FA.  I think they are restructuring the contract like they did with J.D. Drew.

Edes via the linked article:
Quote
Saturday, multiple sources confirmed that Napoli's hip is the primary issue holding up the deal, but said simply adding contract language protecting the Sox as a remedy in case it proves to be debilitating may not be enough to salvage the agreement. Such contract language was inserted in prior deals the Sox did with outfielder J.D. Drew and pitcher John Lackey.

Didn't Boston finish with a protected pick?  So if they sign LaRoche they give up a 2nd rounder I believe.

I can understand why a flash in the pan team like the O's wouldn't want to give up a first round pick.  But the Red Sox should think they can possibly contend and giving up a 2nd round pick shouldn't mean that much to them.  What percentage of 2nd round picks even make it to the big leagues at all (including as even utility guys or middle relievers)?

I also think Napoli would be getting screwed more than the Red Sox if this deal falls through.

New GM. He wants to build his own team.

Morse could also crush in Fenway.

*sigh*
The longer this goes on either the team will tire and not want LaRoche at all or he returns and the fans are tire of him because of the holdout.

I think they want to hold the pick. Giving up a pick, even a 2d, penalizes a team because they lose draft money.

They are more or less looking at being a marginal wild card contender if things go right.  They are not really targeting 2013.  That would be one reason not to trade for Morse.

If a protected-draft-pick team signs LaRoche, what is our compensation?  I.e. if it's a normal team, we get a sandwich pick between first and second.  If it's a protected  team, do we still get that or is it a sandwich between second and third?

no.  we still get a pick between the 1st and second round.  The only difference is what pick the other team gives up.

At this point, I don't care if we get a ham sandwich for ALR...

Cleveland gives up its 3rd round pick but we get a sandwich pick.

We have a good potential trading partner for Morse if we can sign LaRoche.

Honestly? I'd dump both. I don't think either of them will return to the glory of their career years and shake the pillars of the NL East again.

There was a deal in place (pending physical) so what does that mean, "can't work out anything"?
