I'm on my gaming computer a lot. Since Linux isn't that mainstream video game developers don't spend time developing their games for it. If this were different, or if WINE was a bit more comprehensive, I would drop Windows entirely like a hot potato (it also helps that my gaming computer is really, really nice

) I'm curious though, where does it say my other hits are from?

I imagine I have a good mix at this point. I'm trying to stop using Safari on my home computer but habits are hard to break.

I like Chrome. I just always hit the Safari icon in the dock. I've been trying to switch over to Chrome. I should probably just delete the Chrome icon.

So, I'm trying to switch an old Acer netbook of mine to Linux, because Windows just runs slower and slower as it gets upgraded. I picked a stable version of Linux Mint (13), downloaded it, and noticed that it wanted to run as a DVD image. So, I installed a DVD emulator and ran it. Seemed to work fine. It said I needed to reboot to finish the install, but when I rebooted, it wouldn't continue.

Do I need an external drive, do you think? I'm wondering if when I reboot to finish the install, it's trying to locate a DVD drive...

Thoughts? Do you recommend a different variant? I had hoped I'd be able to install Chrome, but it doesn't seem available for download/install.

Usually you download an .iso file which needs to be burned to disc (not just copied to disc, but burned as a disc image). Then you can reboot with the disc in the drive and it should boot from the DVD, running the OS without installing or offering you the option to install to the hard drive.

If you have a netbook, I assume you have no optical drive. It looks like Mint has a Windows installer for some of the heavier versions, allowing you to install from within Windows, but I've never used anything like that so I can't comment on how it works.

You'd probably want to use a lighter interface on a netbook, so even if you use the windows installer for one of the heavier versions, you'd probably want to install something like the xfce desktop environment. Mint should have that available to install from it's "app store" type thingy.

I installed that .iso file straight from the hard drive using a freeware DVD drive emulator. Upon reboot, though, when asked if I want to run Windows or continue the install (I pick continue the install), it just stops. Of course, at this point, there's no freeware emulator running, and that .iso file is not mounted.

I have no optical drive, but I think one is in my future. They're cheap. I'm just trying to get encouragement that I could be on the right track.

Ah, yeah I see now. Yeah, it stops because it's looking for the "disc drive" but since the emulator isn't running, it doesn't find it.

For even more speed, you could try some lighter DEs from the software repos (like xfce). It's easily changeable as far as which one you wish to use by default. I figured KDE would still be kind of slow on an old netbook.
