Could Strasburg go back to SDSU? Is Boras his official agent yet?

From what I know, Strasburg can go back to SDSU. Boras is still his "advisor"

No, he can't. Strasburg's signing deadline is August 17 because he can still return to college. Same deal as Crow last year.

Crow & Scheppers only have this option this year because they played this season in an independent league.

Thanks. Misread it.  strasburg would have it apply to him after to 2010 draft, if he qualifies (no sign w/ Nats, goes independent, skips senior year, drafted again, does not sign with new team).

Perez signed today

The Washington Nationals today agreed to terms with shortstop Roberto Perez, who was selected in the eighth round of the 2009 First-Year Player Draft out of Dorado (PR) Academy. Nationals Assistant General Manager and Vice President of Baseball Operations Mike Rizzo made the announcement.

The 6-foot-1, 175 lbs. Perez is blessed with advanced defensive instincts and a strong throwing arm that has rendered extended pitching stints during his prep days. Perez, 18, had originally committed to played baseball at Oklahoma State University. He is the nephew of former big league shortstop Dickie Thon.

With today’s signing, the Nationals have now agreed to terms with 27 players from the 2009 First-Year Player Draft, including 10 of their top 12 picks. The Nationals’ First-Year Player Draft class of 2009 is listed below, with those in bold having already signed or agreed to terms.

Thats pretty awesome, I was hoping they would be still going after their top picks. What are the odds of the Nats getting Karns and Pena to sign?

Pena sounds like a very interesting prospect and it seemed like it wasn't going to take that much to sign him from the initial reports on him.  It'd be nice if they could get him signed before next Tuesday, but 9/10 (given they sign SS) isn't too bad.

Jim Callis of Baseball America had a chart of the top 10 picks that remained unsigned and what they were looking for.  His comment on Pena was that he's expected to go to his JC.

Perez surprises me.  Very nice.

Karns has been doing well in the Texas Collegiate League.  He'd be nice, but anyone beyond SS is a bonus as far as I'm concerned.

Why is Pena choosing a JC over the Nats? I thought for sure they would sign him.

They should pay Karns big money to get him signed because he will be a high pick next year.

sf:  They're probably going to be spending more on Strasburg alone than any other team will on their entire draft.  They seem to have found some very good prospects.  While it would be nice to see them get more(Karns and Pena), I think they've done a great job considering their situation.

From Chico:

Of those 11 players, only two remain unsigned. One, you know. The other is fifth-round pick Miguel Pena, a high school lefty from Mission, Texas. Acting GM Mike Rizzo on Friday afternoon said that the Nats were still hopeful to sign Pena.

I read he had a knee injury.  I believe he's done for the year.  I'm not sure about instructionals.
