Philadelphia's Jamie Moyer (2-1, 3.05 ERA) will be hoping his team stays hot at the plate as he makes his second straight start against the Nationals on Tuesday. The 44-year-old left-hander allowed two runs in eight innings of Thursday's 4-2 win in Washington.

"He does it to everybody. That's why he's been around for so long," Washington manager Manny Acta said. "He's done it against experienced teams and young teams. He's a master of changing speed."

Washington's Jason Bergmann (0-1, 3.94), who also pitched in the recent two-game series between these teams, allowed three runs in 6 1-3 innings of the Nationals' 5-4 win in 13 innings on Wednesday. The right-hander hasn't earned a win since Sept. 15, 2005, and hasn't won in his career as a starter.

However, he has turned in two straight strong outings, including six scoreless innings of one-hit ball in Atlanta on April 12.

Did I hear wrong or did Johnny Holliday just say that Bergmann has pitched in 80 games and has yet to win a game?

I know that's wrong but it sure sounded like he made that mistake.

He has pitched in 47 MLB games, including 10 starts.  He won 2 games in 2005, but I'm pretty sure he has zero wins in games he's started.  He entered the minors as a starter in 2002 with what is now called the Vermont Lake MONSTERS.  They tried him at relief in the minors and majors between 2004-2006.  The Nationals were desperate to develop a starter, so they went back to him last year.  Since 2005, he's averaged around one strikeout per inning and about 2 K's per BB.  That's why I think he's their biggest "project" pitcher: he has the potential to be a superstar.  He walked 6 in his first game but only one last time, striking out 6, as he put more movement on the ball.  I'd like to see him complete 7 innings or even a whole game.  GO JAY!

Bergmann was 2-0 in 2005 with a 2.75 ERA in 19.2 innings as a reliever.  Like N2P said, he has never won a game as a starter though.

I read that Moyer was only throwing it in 60-70mph range, and that he didn't go over 80 mph much.  I don't think he CAN throw one 90mph.  Most writers are waiting for a team to shell him.  We KNOW what he's going to do.  Slow pitching gives more time to see it.  Let's knock him out in less than 2 innings!!!

I really don't like having Kearns and Church batting back-to-back.

I'm calling the 2nd inning now:

Kearns - flyout
Church - base hit or a strike out
Restovich - groundout (possibly DP)
Schneider - groundout (if Church gets on and Restovich doesn't GIDP)

Yeah I knew he had won a couple out of the BP in 2005 but my point was that I think Holliday made a huge mistake in saying that he had not won a game in 80 appearances.

Nice 1st inning for Bergmann against 3 really good hitters.  The Phillies offense as a whole has really been on a roll as of late.

They both strike me as very all-or-nothing hitters.  I would like to see Kearns batting lower in the order, and Church batting higher with some OBP guys on either side of him.

Let's take that bottom of the first by Bergmann, print it, file it, and make it a Christmas card.

Nice inning for Bergman. He needs to build on his recent success. If he would just go after hitters he would learn that his stuff is good enough to pitch at this level.

The first is over already?  Ugh, MLB Gameday sucks.

Pitch count after 0ne inning: Bergmann 8, Moyer 20
Moyer is 44 years old.  That's "old."

I like your thinking, but unfortunately, we are lacking some options. Church is actually keeping a high OBP, and Manny said he would be in the 2 hole if Nick was healthy. (I actually would prefer Nick in the 2 hole, but I would take Church if he wasn't one of our best power options. Against lefties, Church's spot in the lineup is a lot trickier.)
