Feels good, no?

I totally heard that in a Pepe La Pew voice.

Feels fantastic.

Of course FiOS is down, so I'll probably miss most of the ASG festivities.

REALLY!?!?!

My BiL's FiOS was working even when the power was off. He hooked up the TV and box to the generator and was watching TV

Back from a July 4 vacation. Power was still out when I left on the 4th, and is out (again, not still) when I got home today. Well done, Dominion.

Fortunately, our power came back last Tuesday.  Unfortunately, an 80 foot tree nailed our house, so we have to move out for 2-3 months while they put on new trusses, roof, attic, bedroom ceilings, siding, replace carpets, etc.

Do you have a place to go?

Working on it the last few of days.  Thanks for asking.  We may be headed for 2 1 BR apts. - a little crowded for 2 adults and 4 kids, but it's a nice place - has a pool, gym, W/D inside the apts., etc. and  it's fairly near our house.

Yeah, that's true (ours was built in 1986 - they may have changed the code since then).  Also, my wife and I keep on reminding each other that we really wanted to get rid of that tree anyway.  (The tree is was on our neighbor's property - between their house and ours - and we had asked them permission to cut it down at our expense, but they refused.) So at least it's gone for good now.

How's their insurance company liking it now? I assume if it was on their property then their insurance is paying for the repairs, not yours, right? Not quite sure how that works.

Actually, it's not that way in MD, at least not in Montgomery County, so they dodged a bullet.  They are actually a nice family, just too attached to their trees, even the dangerous ones.

Is your homeowners putting you up in the apts? Or are you having to foot the bill for it? Best wishes! We have a big double Oak in front of my house that's as dead as it gets and yet the wife and I would damn near come to blows over it whenever I mentioned getting it cut down. She likes that it fills our picture window and the squirrels and birds play on it. From the front of the house, it ruins what little curb appeal we have right now as I've been unable to keep up with the maintainance lately. Now she's OK with cutting it down, but it costs too damn much. What a pain in the ass.

Yes, our insurance is paying for us in the apts.  Our tree cost $8,000 to remove (with a bucket truck and a bobcat)!  A friend of mine knows someone who had to pay $11,500 to extricate a big old oak from their kitchen/property.

Those are combat prices.  In two months it would cost $2,000 for the same tree.

We have two big oaks in the tree boxes in front of our house. I hold my breath whenever there's wicked weather going on. Knock wood, they've managed not to kill us in our sleep during a storm.

http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/story/2010/04/14/ST2010041401402.html?sid=ST2010041401402

the prices are all over the place- we use strictly stumps, one of the places listed in the article. When we had a few trees removed and others trimmed after moving in, the removals ranged from under 500 (even excluding the one who couldn't verify he was insured) per tree to almost 2,000

Well, we finally moved into a "luxury" 2 bedroom apartment last Friday, so now we just need to get our house into pre-derecho condition.

I'm hoping all of the remaining trees near our house stay standing in the meantime.  (I don't think I mentioned that this is the third time a large tree fell on our property  (second time on our roof) in the last three years.  (Fortunately the other two times weren't nearly so bad).

I spent 2 hours Sunday and another yesterday splitting wood from our felled 100' oak.  Then, hauling it via wheelbarrow to my woodpile.  I've got 10 years worth at my low burn rate.

It's great exercise and I get lots of neighbors stopping by to express incredulity.

Not to mention probably seeing if you have more than you can use.

I've always wondered ... what makes it "luxury?"

Does anyone understand weatherman math? On the 10 day view there is a 40% chance of rain, on the hourly a 40% chance at 8:00, a 50% chance at 9:00 and a 60% chance at 10:00 and 11:00
