Strasburg #3 prospect in 2009 draft?
« Topic Start: April 10, 2009, 10:41:27 PM »
Check this out.   Is it just me or are they making the flimsiest justification for why Gibson is ranked over Strasburg?   For all I know, he could be better, but it's like he cherry picked the numbers to support a position just for the sake of going against "conventional wisdom"

He'll only be #3 if his arm falls off.

It's crap like that that give people who use stats smartly a bad name.

That's bull. When you get to the big-leagues, what's gonna matter? Your number of college shutouts or the ability to blow a hitter away with a pitch they can't see?

The fast ball chart is interesting,  but Stras doesn't rely on it exclusively so it really doesn't apply. I personally appreciate how the use hundreds of subjective facotrs in comming out with their rankings,

TRUE Rank is a rankings model that uses hundreds of past amateur scouting reports to rank current players. TRUE Rank examines hundreds of different variables and selects the best indicators. The result is a system that selects players 60% more accurately than the average team.

If their results were remotely accurate, you would think that the Yanks or Sox would have bought the rights to it. My guess is the system perfers college prospects, and scores 'accuracy' based on major league time, not actual production.
