Summer Olympics 2016
« Topic Start: July 05, 2016, 08:45:04 AM »
This is shaping up to be interesting:

Rio police tell tourists "we can't protect you"

So called "super-bug" antibiotic resistant bacteria found in Rio's waters:

As of now, I have no interest in watching the 2016 summer games.    I've been an Olympics guy my whole life (varying reasons from John Thomas/Bob Hayes to the Dream Team, etc.).    There's nothing that "grabs" me.    That all may change but I ain't feelin' it right now.    The things I know most about this Olympiad   ....  are not-games related.

The older I get the more I care about other international competitions- World Cup, Tour de France, even presidents/Ryder cup and the less I care about the Olympics

Phelps in his fifth Olympics, Katie Ledecky dominating 200-800 m (she's broken her 800m world record 10 times) at 19. That's just swimming. I've been watching the Olympic trials and it's been super fun.

I'll watch soccer and swimming, but probably not much else.

Peter Sagan in mountain biking

There was plenty of doom predicted for the 2014 WC, so my guess is that this will go off more or less as planned, give or take a few cases of zika and hepatitis.

FiOS/cable helps me ignore the Olympics as well.    I was watchin' John Thomas on tape delay in 1960.     I might get to see the World Cup Final on Saturday's version of Wild World of Sports.    Now, I can watch the final live as well as all the other rounds   ....  BPL every week in season, etc.    Hell, one night I watched a Chinese pro league basketball game.   :)

When many of us were younger there was not much in terms of sports in tv during the week. So the Olympics could dominate. Now it's non stop sports all year round. I won't pay much attention to the Olympics until they get here. A few things of interest probably. Will Usain Bolt get his third gold in the 100 meter? Nothing else comes to mind as of now.

The 2016 World Steroid and Blood Doping Festival runs from 5th-21st August...Nats are playing every one of those days (barring re-schedulings) except the 8th and the 11th, and that's what I'll be following those days. (Haven't really followed a Summer Olympics since 1984.)

The cycling should be pretty good.  The road race with the Columbian Dream Team plus Froome, Contador, and Nibali could be incredible, plus I may even watch Wiggo and Cav on the track.

I like the Winter Olympics way more than the Summer Olympics but I'll still get into the gymnastics, swimming and probably the high diving.  Is there anything else in the Summer Olympics with any element of danger whatsoever? Track and Field is kind of a joke it seems, we have a guy from Pensacola who was busted for PED's, banned for several years, is now in his 30's and running just as fast as before?  Riiiiight :smh:  but I do hate to hear how bad it appears to be in Rio, hopefully security-wise it'll be fine and maybe it'll be like other years where it's all doom and gloom and then the games start and everything's fine.

Equestrian riding, pole vaulting, and boxing.

All of the above.  I wonder how many marathon runners will go missing?  The whole 50 km race walking field will probably disappear without a trace in some favela.

There is some pretty good evidence that steroids have a long lasting effect. Years.

I love the Summer Olympics, but these games are going to be a disaster. I'll still watch though.  :hysterical:

The USOC had better set aside some serious cash to pay for all of the Sovaldi the windsurfers and rowers will need.

Only looking forward to usain bolt.  Could be the most impressive athlete of the era. Up there with lebron. Phelps  and ledecky dominate a niche dumb sport.

Almost everybody in the world can run 100m, making them a candidate for the event.  Bolt freaking annihilates them. You shouldn't be able to win a nine second  event comfortably enough to coast the last few strides and look behind you.  And he does.

Back in 9th grade, I ran the 100 (yds) in 15 seconds.    Nothin' but speed.
