This is weird. Langerhans just got traded from the Braves to the A's and now he gets traded to the Nats. When he got traded to the A's I remember thinking about that play that cost them the game in Atlanta last season on Nick Johnson's tapper back to first.

WHAT?!  Link please.

So we trade a light hitting left handed outfielder for another light hitting left handed outfielder that is 2 years older with less upside?

hijacked from DaveBinMD (no relation) on the mlb board

snipped from an MLB.com story:
"Langerhans has spent most of the past two years as Atlanta's starting left fielder, but he came up as a center fielder. The Braves drafted Langerhans in the third round of the 1998 First-Year Player Draft and he debuted in 2002. He's appeared in 296 Major League games, with a career batting mark of .243 with 15 home runs and 71 RBIs. Considered a top defensive outfielder, Langerhans has committed just two errors in nearly 500 chances."

This doesn't appear to leave any room for Nook Logan to get a whiff of starting regularly anymore.

I think Langerhans will platoon in the outfield, come off the bench ... I think Nook will be the starter in center as soon as he comes back ...

Last 3 Sporting News Skinnies on Langerhans:

April 29, 2007 - 8:16 p.m.
The A's acquired Langerhans from the Braves on Sunday for a player to be named or cash. He'll start in center field for Tuesday's game against Boston. Oakland has two outfielders (Mark Kotsay and Milton Bradley) on the DL, and Nick Swisher and Bobby Kielty have been out of action recently.
Fantasy Source spin: We guess the A's decided they needed help after Marco Scutaro got a start in the outfield. Langerhans is nothing special -- you do see that .068 average he's leaving in the NL -- but he should see regular at-bats over the next couple weeks. AL-only owners suddenly have a new outfielder worth adding.

April 29, 2007 - 1:00 a.m.
After an 0-for-3 night Saturday, Langerhans is just 2-for-41 this season.
Fantasy Source spin: Ouch. Too much longer and the Braves might have to ship him out. It goes without saying that he is losing his platoon rights.

April 21, 2007 - 2:41 p.m.
The Braves' website notes that the Braves will face four left-handed pitchers in a five-game span starting Saturday. That means Matt Diaz will get the bulk of the playing time.
Fantasy Source spin: The only thing keeping Langerhans in the Braves' lineup at all is his defense. You can live without him.

Yeah, I see Langerhans as nothing more than a late inning defensive sub which we don't need because Logan, Church, and Kearns all play very solid defense.

Maybe he'll platoon with Logan in CF.

Yeah this is a curious move.

Doesn't this have more to do with Snelling being out of "options" than anything else? Better to trade him now and get something rather than sending him down when Logan and Guzman come back and losing him all together for nothing in return ... or am I wrong about that?

Where's a source about the Snelling deal?

That's a shame.  I've been a big Snelling fan this season.  He might not be getting many hits, but he's getting on base at a very useful level.

We could have kept Snelling up and sent down Restovich (who cares if we lose him) and Casto (has options I'm assuming).

I've liked Langerhans when he was with the Braves.  I think he should start, to be brutally honest.

Just what I expected.  Hensley leaves the game and now we can't hit a lick.  Bowden to be interviewed on MASN after the break, this should be interesting..

We've cooled off after it looked like we were off to a hot start.

For a team with with a dire need for offense you'd start a guy who is hitting .063 this season?

Langerhans stats this year are on a low number of at bats. His past numbers show that he can be productive. He's a more flexible defender, and once his numbers settle back to normal, he should be able to do at least as well as Snelling. This should just give us more flexibility. If Nook can't hit and or gets hurt, and Escobar never sees the light of day, an OF of Kearns, Church, and Langerhans isn't bad at all.

The Nationals announcers said it was a done deal on TV, and that Snelling could not play tonight because of the deal; we'd be short one player.
