We had ours done professionally, I'm not going up 3 stories to put screens in.  Depends on the size of your house but it's surprisingly affordable.  Should be well less than $500 even for a decent sized house.

Many in our NoVa neighborhood use Precision Gutters - Tom is fair, makes great recommendations and does fine work.

I have incredibly heavy tree cover. i use a version of this http://gutterstuff.com/guttering/ and it works great. Leaves still hang around on top of the gutters between heavy winds, but nothing gets past them, and they do not clog.

Wire screens don't work at all for me, but it's probably due to the type of leaf fall.

Why don't you cover them?

Might last 10 years between cleanings if you cover them, and you don't need expensive solutions either.  Wire screen covers sold at big box retailers work great.

Fairfax County has just cancelled school for Monday AND Tuesday already. I can see canceling Monday, but it's too early to cancel for Tuesday....

Test it by putting lots of water down the drain where it is.  Like, turn on the hose.

The obvious point however, is that sumps don't work without electricity, so natural drainage is vastly superior.

I found out that you can get a 24 hour backup battery for a sump, but I won't be able to get it until after the storm. It looks like you need those professionally installed.

You also cannot buy flood insurance in the DC area right now :bang:

Montgomery County Schools already canceled classes on Monday and Tuesday  they always wait until the last second to cancel school so this is a bit of a surprise...

Odd that the UMD College Park closure hasn't come over the email alert system.  The boy says he hasn't gotten it yet.

I had read where OPM was supposed to give its decision at 17.00 but haven't seen anything as yet, either on their site, WTOP or the Post.

I would think they'd have to give at least liberal leave (State of Maryland already is) since the near-unanimous school closings, along with MARC not operating, pretty much force the issue for a lot of people.

I got my email just now, but President Loh tweeted it about an hour ago.

But if he lives in the dorms, the diner will still be open so I promise he won't starve  the grocery store was absolutely packed but I got this week's groceries fine from the Shoppers on Rt. 1. Only thing I couldn't get was bottled water (I'll be fine).

He's in The View. He gave us his grocery list on Thursday. He's ready to go.

Fed is closed

Now confirmed on OPM site (http://www.opm.gov/status/index.aspx) - with the weather set to get its worst round normal quitting time (weather.com hourly forecast for this area has winds topping off at 37mph - not counting gusts - at 17.00 Monday), and with the aforementioned near-total shut-down of the schools, this is the only sensible course.

Yep!  Capital weather gang announced on Facebook.  I then verified on their website.  My guess is most transportation is canelled.  Marc is cancelled.  If electricity is effected then Metro would be.

My plan is to unplug my PC from my UPS when/if the power goes out and then move it and plug in the Sump pump.

How long will something that drives a computer for 15 minutes drive a sump pump for?
