Prince could be final piece for Nationals  By Hal Bodley | MLB.com Columnist

""I think our ballclub is one or two players away from being a heck of a ball team," said Nats manager Davey Johnson.

Johnson, the ideal skipper for this young team, said he's keeping an open mind about Harper, "but I'd love to see someone who could sting the ball from the left side and make the ballclub. It will be an interesting spring."

Footnote: Fielder bats from the left side, has stung the ball on occasion -- as attested by his 230 home runs and 656 RBIs after just seven seasons.

Just a thought."

Put Davey in charge of the Fielder account---he will get it done.

Well, they're signing me for nothing.  Clint and Terrance are now expendable that I'm on board.

So they now can't afford to extent Zimmerman?

This has been bogus all along, there's no other way to say it.  They could sign Fielder and extend Zimmerman and still have ample resources going forward.  Without looking too deep I don't think they'd come very close to the top 10 in payroll.

Sign Fielder.

Extend everyone else.

I have been pretty much in the camp of not signing Fielder. I wouldn't be upset if they did without it impacting our  core players especially Zimmerman. I think signing PF will not be a move being done in a vacuum. I see several moves necessitated by the signing.

1) LaRoche has to be traded no later than the deadline either for prospects to replenish those we lost in the Gio trade with a healthy Marrero taking his roster spot
2) Harper has to be ready to move up by June / July
3) Morse has to be traded for a Bourn type with the CF signing an extension prior to the trade ( can that be done ?)
4) I am not sure we want to make any trades within our division leaving the Bourn option off the table.

I don't see anything wrong with trading within the division.  No different than any other trade really.  You give up, you get, should be a win-win if done properly.  If you can improve your team while improving another team in the division by an equal amount, you've both improved compared to the 3 other non-partners still in the division.

Upton will probably be the most talked about CF at the deadline yet again.

Just a hunch and a wild guess: by the end of tomorrow Fielder signs with a team that isn't Texas or Washington.  7/$160

About 115 pages ago I said that this feels so much like Teixeira that I predicted the Yankees.  I stand by it.  Though, I had predicted yesterday would be the day....

EXPECT IT.

The Yankees seem serious about their budget, and it seems late enough in the offseason to believe them.  Since the Montero trade it's been reported they're looking for a cheap DH.  The Bodley column mentions the Giants, who've been kind of forgotten, but they have extension talks for Lincecum and/or Cain, plus probably will have to move Posey to 1B at some point.

I am not sure I would like to see Morse 18 games a year.

Better yet if you can get one over on a division rival so that we improve at their expense.

Definitely can never rule out the Yankees, but they're the Yankees and if Prince was on their radar I don't know why they'd have waited this long.

I'm sorry but nats fans should be pretty irate if they don't land Fielder (or somehow magically pull off another trade to improve the o).  The offense was bad last year and they haven't done anything to improve it this offseason.

But but but everyone comes back and improves and no one gets hurt and no one takes a step back. It'll all work!

There are a lot of things to be irate about but this isn't one of them [Fielder]. I may be able to work up to slightly bothered if you can provide a suitable rant. Bonus points for repetition across numerous threads.

I already went on a rant on this. They don't make a legitimate attempt at Fielder, they're telling me that they aren't going to win for two years. We're still on the two year plan.

to be fair, this has to be at least the fourth or fifth two year plan by now

Yea I know.

But after trading a lot away for Gio, I really thought they were going to start this two  year plan. Or end it.
