Goodwin off to a 1/19 (.053) with 3 BB/7 K start in AA. Hopefully he catches on soon.

I'd love to see Goodwin play in the AFL and have a real shot at making the squad in 2013.

Then all the money we'd need for a FA like Bourn could be funneled to J Zimm and E Jax.

I know, I know, it shouldn't have to be that way - but that's the world us Nats fans live in.

september 2013 and a shot at 2014 is more realistic if they push him, 2015 wouldn't be out of the question. I can't see him getting anything more than a cup of coffee in 2013

Agreed.

I'm okay with a Morse, Harper, Werth outfield for another year and if we let Laroche walk and move Morse to first finding a capable corner OFer is much easier than a CFer.

Heck, we may already have one in Tyler Moore.

Nah, I have to head to Lynchburg today so I didn't get a chance to go last night as I had things to do around the house.

Harsh words from Harrisburg Senators beat reporter:

What a horrible route from CF Brian Goodwin on a shallow fly ball to center. Falls for a single, and Akron has bases loaded, one out, 1-1.

Unfortunately, his defense was the biggest question mark for him in most of the predraft write-ups.

Maybe he went to the Bernandina school of "playing the outfield 101"

Saw things I liked last night, and things I didn't.

lead off single +. Getting thrown out later in the game going from first to third on single - . He hesitated on contact and then tried to push it. Don't know if he got a bad read, or if it was a tough one to read, either way, you don't try to take 3rd. seems to either hit the ball hard, or miss entirely. Struck out twice, once was his fault, but hey that happens. The second k from last night should come off the books for him. It was the last out of the game with the home team up by 2, and after a ~30 min delay earlier due to lights going out, the Ump wanted to go home. called out on 3 strikes without swinging, and not single one of them was even close. Hard to tell from where I was sitting how well he played CF, didn't see any mistakes, but without commentators smarter than me telling me he messed up and the benefit of replay, no way for me to tell (i'm much smarter when watching the game on TV)

He is as advertised - capable of it all, needs time. Unless he makes big improvements, 2013 is not his year - though not many are saying it was, so....

Thanks for the report.  I'd be happy with a stopgap type player manning CF for the Nats in 2013 based on the expectation that Goodwin should be ready in 2014.  A quality stopgap like Victorino who should be available.  I'd rather have that than have Bourn on a 6 year contract.

Victorino won't sign a one year deal. He wants long term as well.

I doubt you could ever get a decent CF to sign a one-year deal. Coco Crisp got 2 years, Marlon Byrd got 3 years, Mike Cameron got 2 years, even Willy Tavares got 2 years. Aaron Rowand got 5 years. That's the past 5 years.

The only CF in that period that have signed one year deals are guys like Ankiel, Podsednik, and Grady Sizemore. I'm hoping we can do better than that, even if it means we have to use Bryce there another season.

Considering Harper's decent defense in CF, I think any offseason move for a CF seems like pushing pieces around the board.

You're not likely getting more WAR out of CF X, Harper, Morse, and Werth than you are out of Harper, Morse, Werth, and LaRoche. Considering we're talking about the difference between a LaRoche deal (~$8-10 million/year) and CF X's salary, I can't see how it's worth it. Pushing pieces...

Now you probably upgrade the team significantly if you resign LaRoche, replace Morse with Harper, and sign Michael Bourn or trade for Denard Span. But I'm still not sure that's the best use of resources if we're working under LAC constraints.

Saw Goodwin last night. Had one chance in CF: long, huge, line drive hit off of Chien Ming Wang, who appears finished. Long run, out-stretched left arm to save probably a triple. Looks comfortable in CF.

Could not hit a thing.

My guess, from one game, is that both Goodwin and Rendon need at least another half-season at AA, then time in AAA to learn to hit.
