Look at the rookie years of great pitchers and then look again at Speigner.

Eh, yeah I'm looking:
2-3, 8.78 ERA (39 ER in 40 IP), 58 H, 23 BB/19 K

You seem to have wood for Hayden Penn.  Shall I post his career MLB numbers?

In the NYPL All-Star game tonight Michael Guerrero went 0 for 2 and Derek Norris went 0 for 1 with a walk as the National League team came back to win it in the bottom of the 9th with a walk-off double by David Flores (Tri-City).  PJ Dean did not see any playing time, because he recently pitched on Sunday.

haha penn is four years younger than speigner and could use the change of scenery.  HP was rushed to the bigs and was not ready.  He would've gotten the call up twice this season but wasn't available to due injury (including one freak injury).

But sure give the kid another chance.  It'll be the same as last season's production.  If it isn't I'll eat Crow (not Aaron).

Speigner is a reliever now, not a starter. Big difference. He has obviously found his real niche. He dominated in AA and then they promoted and now he's dominating in AAA. 20 consecutive scoreless innings with 18 Ks to only 4 BBs over that span. You can't ignore those numbers. If bums like Brian Sanches, Charlie Manning, and Steven Shell got a shot, surely Speigner will too.

Well who's to say Speigner isn't another AAAA player like Sanches?  I'm not going to make that assumption, but it's possible.

But I think it's wrong for hammondsnats to judge Speigner so quickly just based on that.

And now you're calling Steven Shell a bum?  35 innings, 2.06 ERA, 16 BB/28 K ratio in his rookie year at the MLB level!  I'd like to think out of all the guys in our bullpen currently right now (excluding Mock and Estrada), the only two to be on next year's roster are Shell and Rivera (maybe Manning, if we don't go after a left handed specialist).

And if we're going to give Speigner a chance, why not Mike Hinckley?!?!  3.38 ERA in 18.2 IP.  He comes out of the pen as the lefty guy.

It's possible that he's another AAAA player but I really think he has a chance. He seems to be tailor-made to be a reliever. He has always been shaky as a starter but he's been solid as a reliever. His control has been great this year and he is also very tough to hit (40 hits allowed in 53.1 IP between AA+AAA). He also has not given up the long ball (3 HRs allowed in 53.1 IP).

Ah I think I've seen as much Speigner as I could take in his stint last year.  I'd almost prefer to have Mike O'Connor up here.

 :funny:

Be nice, check this out from Nationals Farm Authority!

Did I hear Charlie and Dave say Mike O’Connor was badly injured in batting practice? I thought I heard broken nose.

Yes, freak accident. Mike was hit by a line drive yesterday while he was throwing his bullpen prior to the game. The ball broke his nose, cheek bone and cracked his right orbital bone. He is done for the season and will be in DC Friday for surgery. He is doing as well as he can considering everything.

His numbers aren't nearly as good as Speigner's. He has allowed 12 walks and 18 hits in 18.2 IP.

Over his last 10 outings: 8 IP 8 H 5 R 5 ER 7 BB 4 K.

Unfortunate injury, poor guy.  Hope everything heals quickly.

No I'm a fan of Mikey.  He's a great kid who really worked hard to get back to throwing.  He didn't fare well this season up in the bigs, but I'm not ready to close the book on him.

Get well soon Mike. Sucks that you missed out on a Sept. call up. Train hard for ST.

Spiegner has been one of the most reliable arms out of the bullpen for the last month at Columbus.

Encouraging start for Stammen tonight in Columbus. He got absolutely rocked in the first inning (3 runs, 4 hits) but then settled down and pitched 5 scoreless innings for a line of: 6 IP 6 H 3 R 3 ER 4 BB 9 K.

Montz had 2 hits including and RBI Double and Broadway homered to go along with 2 walks. And oh yeah, that Bernadina guy keeps hitting. He batted lead-off tonight and went 2/5 with a run scored to up his average to .333.
