2 ERs on 5 innings is not bad, but 6 K's / 1 walk is pretty good news.

I see progression! McGreary with a win 6 IP 6 K 2 ER...Smiley 2-3, he needs a call-up to Vermont. Not much news tonight.

Smart move to promote Burgess. It seems like players get disinterested and bored if you leave them at one level too long. Both Burgess and Rhinehart got off to good starts for Hagerstown before fizzling out and then eventually they get promoted and start hitting again.

So far after 4 games for Potomac, Burgess has posted: 5/15 (.333 BA), 2 Doubles, 2 HRs, 6 RBIs, 4 Runs, 1 BB, 4 Ks.

The New York-Penn League All Star Game is August 19.  Participants from the Vermont Lake Monsters include:

1.  PJ Dean - Starting Pitcher - Dean was last years seventh round pick (220 overall).  So far at Vermont this season he is 3-0 over 37.0 IP.  His has maintained a 0.49 ERA, a 0.78 WHIP, has let up only 10 walks and struck out 30 batters.  10 of those strike outs came in his last start on Aug 11.  Perhaps Dean may face problems when he starts to run into more powerful hitters in A and A+ ball.  Perhaps he will continue to be a promising prospect for the Nationals.

2.  Derek Norris - Catcher - Norris has been showing his potential this season with Vermont.  Norris is fifth in the Penn league in OPS (.891), he is first in OBP (.440).  He was the NYPL player of the week (August 4), the following is an article from when he won the award:

Quote
Norris hit .476 (10-for-21) with five runs, one double, three home runs and seven RBI for the Lake Monsters July 28th through August 3rd, while also walking 13 times and being hit by a pitch twice. He finished the week with a .952 slugging percentage and .694 on-base percentage.

In Vermont's only win of the week, a 5-4 18-inning victory over Lowell last Monday, Norris went 3-for-4 with a three-run homer and five walks to reach base safely in eight of his nine plate appearances.

3.  Michael Guerrero - Outfielder -  Guerrero has also been showing reasons why he should be considered in the team's future.  He was picked by the Nationals in the 21st round of this year's draft and has already played in 55 games for the Lake Monsters.  His negatives include a bad eye (7 walks vs 47 SO) and a pedestrian OBP (.288).  His potentials include a powerful bat that can produce doubles (13 this season) and home runs (7), as well as some RBIs (39).

Another notable member of one of the NYPL teams is Pat Venditte, the pitcher is can pitch righty or lefty and received considerable attention earlier this season when he got into technical battle with a switch handed batter.

All 3 of these guys should be watched. They all show serious potential, and Guerrero does have nice power. 7HR in the NYPL is a lot.

Nice start by Justin Jones in AA today: 6 IP 4 H 2 R 1 ER 1 BB 10 K. Over his last 5 starts he has a 2.15 ERA.

Pathetic and overrated Adam Carr took the loss today without recording an out. 0.0 IP 3 H 1 R 1 ER 1 BB 0 K. His ERA is up to 6.51. What a bum.

Carr has been a disaster this season.  They need to stop using him as the closer and see if he even has any worth, at least as a middle reliever.

That's awesome. I was excited about him when we drafted him. Long Beach St. pumps out some stud infielders.

Good to see Smoker, McGeary and Detwiler progressing.  Also, I'm a close Justin Jones fan.  NFA Brian what do you project for him and can he be a guy to watch down the line?

Nice game for Leonard Davis today: 3/3 with a Double, Triple, HR and 3 RBIs. Hopefully he can continue to improve.

Like Adam Carr, another bonafide bust Zech Zinicola gave up 3 hits and 2 runs today ballooning his AAA ERA to 5.96.

Osvaldo Rodriguez had a good American debut for the Hagerstown Suns today.  He pitched 6.0 innings for the Suns, letting up 5 hits and 1 earned run, while striking out 7 and walking only one.  The 24 year old Dominican right-hander previously posted a 12-0 record for the DSL Nationals1.  He only let up 8 ER in 71 IP, and maintained an ERA of 1.01 and a WHIP of 1.06.  He let up 0 HRs and struck out 107 batters.

Nice to see Arnesen rebound for Potomac. 6.2 IP 6 H 0 R 0 ER 1 BB 4 K. If they hold on for the victory it will be his 3rd win in 5 starts for the P-Nats.

Dean had a rocky start today. 4 IP 2 H 2 R 2 ER 4 BB 1 K.
