Political Correctness Still Going Strong...

This stuff just makes me want to puke...

  http://sports.yahoo.com/mlb/blog/big_league_stew/post/MLB-pulls-Chief-Wahoo-off-Cleveland-s-09-Stars-?urn=mlb,164637

Major League Baseball is rolling out a new round of Stars and Stripes caps for Memorial Day and it appears that they designed the lids with some common sense this time around.

Please remember last season, when the first round of special hats included a stars-and-stripes emblazoned version of Chief Wahoo on Cleveland's cap. A mini-controversy erupted with most people agreeing that it probably wasn't a good idea to endorse the logo with the elements of the American flag and the ideals that it represents.

This year, MLB is avoiding the firestorm completely and going with the alternative that I suggested, opting to modify the block 'C' cap Bill Clinton wore when throwing out the first pitch at Progressive Field in 1994.

So is progress being made? Yes, but only slowly ... MLB.com still sells the '08 version.

To check out the new '09 red caps and some other Stars and Stripes wear, click here. The caps cost $36.99 this year (up $2 from '08) and the usual "portion of the proceeds" will benefit the Welcome Back Veterans fund.

But buyer beware if you're purchasing in the name of supporting our soldiers: Last year, MLB couldn't be bothered to define what they mean by "portion of the proceeds."

Guess I need a new nickname :icon_mrgreen:

Just a reminder, politics go in Uncensored, so if you want this to stay in the loft you need to keep it strictly on the immediate topic...

Personally I think all of the stars-and-stripes hats are ugly.

The Yahoo! people need to do their research ... in 1994 it was still Jacobs Field.

I know, just reminding you.  Threads like these seem to stray off-topic rather quickly.

I don't think anybody would recognize the "block C"...who would want to wear that?  (shrug)

If somebody made a burgundy and gold "block W", I think most people would wonder what the crap it stood for.

From any sort of distance I think I'd have a hard time telling what the Wahoo cap was either.

Well I'm not talking about distance, I'm talking about logo recognition - everybody knows who Chief Wahoo is...even NON-baseball dorks know Chief Wahoo.

Yeah I know.  I was just offering another take on "S&S caps are fugly" ;)

Sorry but this is baseball, not a pep rally.  Isn't baseball american enough without uglying up the caps?  I love our flag but there are just some places it shouldn't go as a matter of taste and respect.

Good point...I guess some people might not like it for that reason, and I can certainly respect that.  So I would assume you feel the same way about the Nats star-spangled alternate jersey as well?

Pretty much.  I like the classic home, new road, and home red/white alternates.

Hideous.

Well i think they were done in a respectful way...I mean it's not like anybody is trying to make a political statement like when the hippies wore flags to protest Vietnam.  But I don't diminish anybody who might feel that way...especially if they are military.

If other people like them then that's cool, I just happen to think it's an ugly design.  I guess 90% of the existing uniforms in baseball already being some variation of red/white/blue was too subtle for today's audience

Or maybe Bud just needed a new private jet.

wrong thread :nono:

But no, I'm pretty sure the added income from the sale of these atrocities for the individual teams is marginal, but I bet MLB itself makes a nice overall profit from their cut.

I always love it when people exploit "patriotism" for a quick buck.

I don't trust the author of this story...it was written in a way that makes me think the guy had some kind of ax to grind.

Major League Baseball Properties, Inc will donate all of the proceeds it receives from the sale of the caps to Welcome Back Veterans. In addition, MLB.com will donate an additional $1 to Welcome Back Veterans for each cap purchased through www.mlb.com.
