No need to start another thread so I thought we could discuss it here. Theo Epstein is about to sign with the Cubs, per ESPN.

Good riddance.

 But the report says the Red Sox are entitled to compensation and will demand something significant.

As they should.  Wonder what they'll request?  Maybe the ivy?  That'd look pretty cool on the green monster.

Zambrano for Lackey?  Soriano for Crawford? Who would come out ahead?

He will fit right in in Chicago, they love spending big $ on flashy players on the downhill slide.  Star power!

Anybody read the piece in the Globe inside the collapse?  Pretty funny stuff, I liked this passage:

Drinking beer in the Sox clubhouse is permissible. So is ordering take-out chicken and biscuits. Playing video games on one of the clubhouse’s flat-screen televisions is OK, too. But for the Sox pitching trio to do all three during games, rather than show solidarity with their teammates in the dugout, violated an unwritten rule that players support each other, especially in times of crisis.

Just a piece on ESPN about this.   Garciaparra said that the dugouts in Boston are small and the players playing need a place to sit so it's often the case that starting pitchers move to the clubhouse.    He said pitchers and others often go there to get treatment.

I read that as the donuts were small. Which would explain the beer and fried chicken.

Sometime when you listen to athletes in a commentary role, it seems they simply talk too much.   They don't grasp how dumb their comments are.   I think NG got caught BS'ing the clock.

It is true that Fenway has a very tiny dugout.  And Fenway has its own Dunkins stand, so you could pick up enough donuts to make up for their smallness.

The thing that put it way over the top for me is the video games during the game.  That's ridiculous.  Hey guys, there is an entertaining live game going on outside the dugout, with all kinds of strategy and great plays.  You even have a stake in it (well, more of a stake than accumulating the high score for the video game).  Why don't you go out and watch with the other boys like a good 7 year old.

Terry Francona won't manage in 2012
Print | Comments (20) Posted by Matt Pepin, Boston.com Staff  November 16, 2011 01:36 PM

Former Red Sox manager Terry Francona told CSNNE.com's Sean McAdam he does not expect to manage in the 2012 season.

Francona interviewed for the Cardinals' manager job, but Mike Matheny was hired last week.

"When I interviewed in St. Louis, I was genuinely excited about it. St. Louis was such an exciting opportunity. But we were all beaten up at the end of the year, and after (interviewing) I took a step back and began to look at things realistically," Francona told McAdam.

Francona also said he has spoken to Cubs president Theo Epstein, the former GM of the Red Sox, but is not a candidate to be the Cubs' manager.

"I need to take a step back and re-energize. That's probably in my best interest right now. In fairness to myself, it's the best thing to do," Francona said

He needs to get well, concentrate on his personal life, and kick back.  I'm glad he's not managing.

Exactly.   Seems like the right choice at this time.

Yep, he can broadcast games for awhile which I thought he did extremely well, and then come manage the Nats whenever they get rid of Davey :)

Theo has not yet agreed to compensation for losing Theo to Theo's team.  There was a rumor that there was a gentleman's agreement that the Sox would name their manager first then the Cubs because they were interviewing a lot of the same people, but that was officially shot down.  compensation is likely to be decided by Bud.

Francona takes Valentine's place on ESPN.
Quote
“Terry is a brilliant baseball mind, with two World Series rings over the last eight seasons, and we’re thrilled to welcome him to our team,” said Norby Williamson, executive vice president, production. “Ted Williams for Joe DiMaggio never happened, but this is ESPN’s version with Bobby moving to the Red Sox dugout and Terry replacing him on Sunday Night Baseball.”

Think they'll let him have fried chicken and beer during the broadcast? ;)

Do we have fried chicken at Nats Park?  Maybe taste of the majors?  If yes, send some up to the booth if he has a Sunday night game.

Just a little dig at what used to go on in the BoSox clubhouse!
