You don't have a cat?  The shelters are full of guys who would love to help you out...any rodent smaller than a capybara would be dead or banished within an hour.

I need to kill a mouse in my garage. Can I set a mousetrap without attracting chipmunks? I've read that mouse traps aren't effective for chipmunks. -- does that mean that the trap would half-kill a chipmunk or that they wouldn't work at all?

I just don't want my wife stumbling on a half dead chipmunk, I don't think it would go over well if the chipmunk had to suffer.

I guess I could get some "ethical" traps and drown the mice.
