Wrong team.  The Washington Nationals have only existed since either 1969 or 2005.  Pick one.

Oh chillax.  I can never keep track.  I thought they were called the Nats in the 20's.

Actually, I believe they were the Nationals officially from 1905 to 1956, just nicknamed the Senators though interchangeably called the "Nats".

Werth's veteran presence will lift the squad in August and be marked as the official start of the playoff surge.

Just as likely as Werth actually having a positive impact on the field for the rest of the season.

If no power for Werth there's likely going to be a lot of lazy flyouts added to his repertoire.

Wrong team.  The Washington Nationals have only existed since either 1969 or 2005.  Pick one.

- Washington had professional baseball teams from about 1870. One was the Washignton Nationals.
- Our teams in thew 1880s were called the Nationals, although Washingtonians began to called the "the Senators" in the mid-1880s. Nobody knows why. The name was popular.
- I believe that the last National League teams, run by a pair of crooks called the Wagner brothers, were the Senators.
- The NL contracted out of Washington, and in 1901 the Senators were among the founding teams in the AL. I believe that the team was the Kansas City team in the Western League, moved east because the AL needed an east coast presence.
- Around 1905, the owner changed the name to the Nationals, perhaps to break the connection to the string of bad AL and NL teams. Fans still called the team the Senators.
- Gary Sarnoff's book on the '33 "Wrecking Crew" sometimes calls tghe team the Natkionals and sometimes the Senators. Always the Nats for short. Buddy Myer, a good 2B, was traded to Boston (I think), and Griffith traded and paid to get him back. Myer is quoted a couple of times as being happy to be back with the "Griffmen".
- In the '5os, Topps sometimes labelled our players as belonging to the Washignton Nationals, and sometime to the Senators.
- Bob Wolff, the TV announcer, always carefully welcomed us to watch "your Washington Nationals".
- Calvin Griffith changed the name to the Senators about 1956, and so it stayed.
- MLB pretended that the 1961 expansion Senators were actually our old Senators. The records were supposed to transfer over, as if the Twins were a new team. fans still called the team the Nats, as did Shirley Povich and Bob Addie, who covered the team for the Post. Same with Morrie Siegel, who covered them for the Daily News.

What matters to me is that we have a Washington baseball team. and it has one of the historical names.

1994 Expos (at least I think that's what they were called at the time) making a charge and now tied for the lead!

Year   W   L   win %
1925   66   38   .635
1994   66   38   .635
1933   65   38   .631
2012   62   42   .596
1979   60   44   .577
1924   57   45   .559
1993   55   48   .534

Nothing wrong with tracking this team vs. both city and franchise history.  And yes, that 1994 team was something else.

Should I split the current team's record v. predecessors into a separate thread "2012 Nats record v. Best in City and Franchise history"?

Also, I don't suppose there is any way to get reliable Grays records when they were here?

I'd love to add the Gray's in if those could be found, I hadn't thought of that.  I don't know that another thread is necessary unless there's a big cry for it.  I'm not planning to post daily, probably weekly...

They were.    But that is confusing names with teams.  Same name ... different teams.

That's like saying two people named John are the same person because they have the same name.

Then let's include the DC Dragons and the DC Mets, etc.   Same city.

The only NL team with 5 starters in the top 20 ERA.  Also the only team with 4 starters in the top 25 ERA in the majors.  In the majors, Zimmermann #3, Strasburg #15, Detwiler #16 and Gonzalez #25 (Jackson is #36).

Living the dream, seriously. I never groan when ANY of our starting pitchers start. It's awesome.

Though I do let out a couple of grunts of non-approval when a reliever comes out but I can't complain.
