Phillies invade Charm City
« Topic Start: February 09, 2012, 02:45:13 PM »
A friend of mine with Orioles season tickets called today to get some extra tickets for the Saturday afternoon game between the Birds and the Phillies on 6/9 and was informed that the game was sold-out.

I have a feeling that whole series will be a sold out soon.

I checked the Orioles site just now and sure enough, only single tickets in a number of sections are currently shown as available.

Must be a full-scale Phillies invasion planned...interesting that it would become nearly fully subscribed this soon, since at Preparation H Park at Camden Yards even the Red Sox visits don't sell out anymore (in the Woes' season-finale home series last year against Boston, all three fixtures drew less than 30k).

Tim Cullen?  Now there's a memory. Didn't he get traded for the same player Twice? I think in the same season?

For the record - current StubHub ticket availability for the Phillies series at Preparation H Park at Camden Yards:

Friday 8th - 1,980 tickets left starting at $32.95
Saturday 9th - 1,377 tickets left starting at $48.99
Sunday 10th - 1,887 tickets left starting at $35

...the prices seem unusually high - has that been historically a big-drawing series? (Tickets on StubHub for the Phillies visit in early May can be had for as little as $14.)

There isn't any relevant history.  The Phillies play in Baltimore only one series every six years  (since 2006 anyway, when Washington replaced the Phillies as "Geographical Rival") so the last time the Phillies were in Baltimore was 2006, I think.

It isn't surprising that this series would be a big draw of fans from Philly. They're less than two hours away (compared with Boston and New York which are much farther) and given that they play in Baltimore 3 games every six years (compared with Boston and New York who play in Baltimore 9 games every year, i.e. 18 times as many).

New York City isn't that much farther from Philly than Baltimore...

Check the promotion schedule.  They are giving away statues of their HOFers all season long.  Hopefully thats not one of the dates!

True, but blO's tickets are much cheaper and easier to get, plus they do have a nice stadium.  The drive south is also a lot easier, and with a lot fewer tolls.  Also, Philthy fans only get to invade Baltimore only once every six years.

I'd like to see what would happen if a team ran an index so the visiting fans are paying the same or higher if D.C. is higher priced as at home for comparable seats and offer discounts to local fans to maintain local prices. I suspect less smucks would show up and the team would make money hand over fist.

No they play each other every year because they are the closest NL rival.

I dont' think they get the Os every year. I think Toronto and Boston alternate between the Braves and the Phillies. The Mets get the NYY, the Rays get the Marlins, the Os get the Nats, and the other two eastern teams alternate.  The Red Sox and Braves complained about always being matched up in the late 90s and early 00s when Philly was the worst of the 4 teams.

Orioles interleague opponents through the years:

1997 - Expos and Phillies home, Braves and Marlins away
1998 - Mets home and away, Braves and Marlins home, Expos and Phillies away
1999 - Phillies home and away, Expos and Mets home, Braves and Marlins away
2000 - Phillies home and away, Braves and Marlins home, Expos and Mets away
2001 - Phillies home and away, Expos and Mets home, Braves and Marlins away
2002 - Phillies home and away, Dodgers and Padres home, Diamondbacks and Giants away
2003 - Brewers, Cubs and Phillies home; Astros, Braves and Cardinals away
2004 - Braves, Diamondbacks and Giants home; Dodgers, Phillies and Rockies away
2005 - Astros, Phillies and Rockies home; Braves, Pirates and Reds away

From 2006 the schedule has included Nationals home and away plus:

2006 - Marlins and Phillies home, Braves and Mets away
2007 - Diamondbacks home and away, Rockies home, Padres away
2008 - Astros and Pirates home, Brewers and Cubs away
2009 - Braves and Mets home, Marlins and Phillies away
2010 - Marlins and Mets home, Giants and Padres away
2011 - Cardinals and Reds home, Braves and Pirates away
2012 - Phillies and Pirates home, Braves and Mets away

[The Nats did not play the Orioles in 2005 since the schedule for that season had already been drawn up by the time the move to Washington was settled - that's also the reason we played the Blue Jays so often back in the early years, since Montreal and Toronto were 'natural rivals' for purposes of interleague scheduling]

Pre-NATS

Also, O's played Philly in the WS in 1983 and Won.   So it's always a hard fought battle
