I'm not sure there's that much more of an upside to being the #1 seed than the #2 seed. And if there is, I think that the advantage isn't as good as a thursday doubleheader would be bad.

Maybe I've still got Ryder Cup golf on my mind, but could the Nationals just concede the race to the Reds?

Well, I don't expect the Nats to play any regulars pretty much at all if there's a double header - not sure it would matter anyway - Cardinals still need 2 wins to get into the playoffs and Cincinnati has already clinched - so it may be a moot point regardless
