MLB contemplating cracking down on GIFs
« Topic Start: April 13, 2012, 02:09:10 PM »
I already thought the ultra-tight control MLB maintains over all of its highlights and videos runs counter to the way most other businesses are operating nowadays, but now they are pondering whether to crack down on gifs made from MLB video/material.  Obviously the benefit of all this authoritarian style of video hoarding redirects some traffic towards their site, but overall I think they are missing out on the ability to increase the sport's popularity through viral-like functions.

Lol, the article you linked is awesome.

Major League Baseball Hates You And Doesn't Want You To Watch Its Sport

Major League Baseball has a idiotic policy — it does everything in its power to make sure you can't see highlights of baseball games.

It takes everything that has an MLB copyright off of YouTube. It only makes a handful of videos embeddable for the public. Generally, it wants you to follow baseball MLB.com, or not at all.

It's a dumb policy because websites like us can't cover the sport like we want to, and readers like you can only enjoy the sport in a controlled, limited, MLB.com-approved capacity.

And the MLB regime just continues to pile it on.  Now they have closed off the capability that allows people the ability to check pitchfx data from brooksbaseball during the game.  Really a huge bummer, for me at least, as I check both MLB gameday and brooks during the game.

Due to some new technical limitations, http://Brooksbaseball.net will now post data immediately following (but not during) games.

They're trying to cover up bad umpiring.  They must have been watching the Nationals-Mets series.

Can't think of any other reason for it.

Are they going to ban networks from doing pitch track graphics next?

Then they can ban announcers from discussing calls.
