.871 OPS last year..

but he's been over 1 OPS lately -that's bananas since he doesn't walk.

Oh give me a freaking break, they give away "area" plays all the time but they're gonna whine about that?  Please.

I was thinking the same thing.  Bob has been getting on the soapbox over a bunch of nonsense the last few weeks, more so than usual.

Bernadina almost missed that ball, as well.

Can I just say, Michael Morse is ridiculous.

He, Espinosa, and ZNN all should rightfully make the All-Star game.

Another solid inning from Lannan, keeping the ball down.

if I could disagree with the boss here, for just one minute....I thought that commercial was stupid. Okay. That is the last time you will get any disagreement from me, sir.

On the surface, yes, it is stupid.  On the surface.

And I don't care if people disagree with me :mg:

It's not fair to say he "doesn't walk."  He doesn't walk as much as a lot of power hitters but he's no Desmond.

Yeah, but small sample size.  There were a ton of smart baseball analysts who didn't credit his numbers in September last year as anything but a statistical aberration.  And those same folks were laughing at Rizzo's/Rigg's decision to keep him on the 25 man (much less promote him to starting 1B) based on his hot Spring Training numbers (because ST numbers are rarely if ever predictive of in-season performance).

Of course Morse has gone and proved everyone comically wrong so far, and I couldn't be happier.

He doesn't walk much for a guy with an OPS over 1 of late.

Also, his BABIP is ridiculously, unsustainably high right now, strongly suggesting that he's due for a major 'correction' downwards in the future.

I don't recall any analysts getting upset about Morse being in the lineup... if I recall correctly he was actually a big sleeper pick in a lot of fantasy publications?  But eh, maybe we read different sources.

His career BABIP is pretty high.  I would personally be quite happy with him hitting .270 or .280 with the power he's demonstrated (which is most definitely sustainable).

when you hit doubles and homers, your BABIP goes up since a lot of them can't be fielded for outs. BABIP is more complicated than just luck.

By the way, as a Mariners fan (on top of my Nats fandom) I can say that Michael Morse's sudden emergence this year is one of the funniest and least expected developments imaginable.  I dunno if most Nats fans are aware, but he got dinged for steroids a couple of times during his minor league career (although to be fair, he -- quite plausibly, actually -- contends that two of his suspensions were for the same single violation).  So I have to say that I consider his recent power surge to be...well, suspicious.

But I'm not about to investigate too carefully!

Yup, we're aware of that. But the fact is that Morse has always been able to hit. He just never got regular playing time. He had as many HRs last season as Willingham did with far fewer ABs. When Rizzo acquired him, he said the guy could flat out hit. He's always hit everything hard and hits line drives. The HRs come with regular playing time.

Nevertheless, all ballplayers are suspect when it comes to PEDs. But Morse is a big guy and has a long swing. Power is to be expected.

You really going to take a pitch that's literally down the middle, Werth?  C'mon man.
