Yeah the mining and using the ore to smelt ingots to make your own gear with is cool too, though I haven't come across very many mines yet.
There are two in Dawnstar. You can do everything there. Mine, smelt ingots, and make weapons/armor. Pretty cool little town, except for the weather. The snow was really coming down when I was there.
