All the best in the world to Edwin now that he will never pitch for DC again.

Kearns set to come back to Marlins on Minors pact

MIAMI -- Some experienced depth appears to be returning to the Marlins.

Austin Kearns will sign a Minor League contract with the Marlins with an invitation to Spring Training, according to the Miami Herald.

Kearns, 32, made the 2012 Marlins as a non-roster invitee, and he was used primarily as a right-handed bat off the bench. In 87 games, the veteran outfielder batted .245 with four home runs and 16 RBIs.

Kearns provides depth as a corner outfielder and at first base.

The Marlins have a concern at first base, because Logan Morrison's status is unclear. Morrison is recovering from right knee surgery, and he isn't expected to begin running until about a week into Spring Training.

If Morrison isn't ready, the team will be looking at other first-base options.

The Marlins are not interested in bringing back free-agent first baseman Carlos Lee.

is there really anyone who thought that Austin Kearns would still be in the majors in 2013?

No way. He probably thought he'd be living at the Ryan's in Covington by 2012.

good for him.  but i was right in that it was an exaggeration in how many teams would take him as a catcher on their major league roster.

The Dodgers signed catcher Jesus Flores to a minor league deal that includes in invitation to Spring Training, Adam Kilgore of the Washington Post reports (on Twitter). Praver/Shapiro represents Flores, who was non-tendered by the Nationals earlier in the offseason.

Flores appeared in 83 games for the Nationals this past season. The 28-year-old posted a .213/.248/.329 batting line with six home runs and 12 doubles in 296 plate appearances. Flores, who bats and throws right-handed, prevented 27% of stolen base attempts against him in 2012. He'll provide depth behind A.J. Ellis along with Tim Federowicz.
