Some say don't deal with the Rays because they need to "win" every deal.  OK, so would this "win" for Friedman work for the Nats?

Morse + Storen for McGee + Odorizzi?
Not Odorizzi. I'd guess that they keep him. Archer is more likely, with some other stuff going to Tampa.

I'd do that instantly.
then it probably isn't realistic

The Rays would ask for Moore, I think, to give them a player who they could control longer and cost less over the next few years.  I think I'd move on, or ask for something more back.

That trade would make a lot of sense for both sides I think.  Sounds great from their perspective -- they'd get a 30 home run, middle of the lineup impact bat (for 1 yr) and a great young back-end of the bullpen arm (for several years) in exchange for just a lefty specialist and prospect projected as a middle of the rotation innings eater.  Lucky for them a lefty specialist and young starting pitching depth is exactly the only thing we need.

Probably makes too much sense to actually happen!

McGee is probably a hi-lev reliever and not just a lefty specialist, but a righty like Storen is more likely to pitch more hi-lev innings.

McGee is an absolute stud in the making and not just a "lefty specialist".

So if we sign Vazquez, and keep Morse and Storen.  This team is completely stacked and can probably absorb a couple major injuries to anyone.  We'd have a #6 starter who'd be a 3 on most teams, a 7th inning guy who could close on a lot of teams, and a legitimate clean up hitter on the bench.

I'd love to see us start the year with that roster.  The only question would be how happy Morse, Det, Storen, and Clippard would be in very reduced roles.

Vazquez would not be a number 3 on most teams. He'd be a number 5.

And given our need for a lefty, we're going to have to trade Morse. Frankly, it's a waste to keep him here, especially with Moore available.

I hate to sound like a huge homer here, but if that last high leverage lefty reliever can be brought into the fold, on paper I don't see how this team doesn't have the best odds to win the WS.  The team really would match up very well against anyone in the NL and likely could compete with the paper giants in the AL as well.

Did Zimm ever end up getting surgery on his shoulder or are we going to be forced through another season of having to rely on cortisone shots?

I would be surprised if we saw a deal before the last week or so of Spring Training. For two reasons:

1. A healthy Morse only increases his trade value. He shows he's gtg, he's valuable. He can't do that, he's not.
2. Spring training will give the Nationals a chance to evaluate Bill Bray as a LOOGY. If he can return to 2011 form, then the Nationals really don't need another lefty between him and Stammen's ability to throw against lefties. Which makes a Morse + Clippard/Storen/HRod ticket far more likely to return a good prospect, which will make up for losing the draft pick for Soriano

If someone had told me 2 years ago that something like this would be written about the Nats in 2013, I would've laughed.  Man has this team come a long way:

"Right about now, the rest of the clubs in the NL East have to be wondering just what the heck they can do to keep pace with the Nationals.

That the Nats shored up their bullpen is disconcerting in particular for the Atlanta Braves, as bullpen depth appeared to be the one advantage they had on them. But now that the Nats have Soriano in addition to Storen and Tyler Clippard, they have a bullpen that can go toe-to-toe with the likes of Craig Kimbrel, Eric O'Flaherty and Jonny Venters in a close game.

Elsewhere on down the totem pole, the upgrade the Philadelphia Phillies made to their bullpen by signing Mike Adams now looks like a moot point. Their bullpen may have been able to compete with Washington's before, but not now.

The Nats already were the favorites to win the NL East in 2013, and now they're easily the surest bet to win the division. You need a magnifying glass to pick out their weaknesses, and whatever weaknesses they have are petty compared to weaknesses of the other teams in the division.

If they don't repeat as division champs in 2013, it will be an upset."

Way too much to pay for Soriano.  I'm hoping we can flip him in a deal somewhere.

I'd probably let that dream die if I were you.

So this morning my hype for this season went through the roof. I was listening to EITM and he was just discussing the signing of Soriano. I already know everything about it and what this means for us, but just the fact that people are talking about it and are amped, gets me amped even more. Baseball cannot take any longer to get here.

The Lerner family is the richest ownership group in baseball by a margin of over a billion dollars.

If Ted Lerner decides over night he wants to start throwing large amounts of money at the team, then the Nats can easily sustain a high payroll level.

This is probably the best way to go.  If they can manage the higher payroll, then it can only help to keep Morse longer.  I might even keep him until the trade deadline and then send him to an AL team that needs another bat in return for whatever the Nats might need at that point (which could be very different than what they think they might need right now).

that'd be idiotic.

just like with lannan, stammen gives us a better chance to win than HRod.

Sign Joe Saunders just to troll Angelos.  Make him the lefty in the pen or trade him to someone else in the AL East.
