General Offense Discussion
« Topic Start: April 16, 2012, 12:09:35 PM »
None of the existing threads really seemed appropriate for this kind of trivia so I figured I'd just make a catch-all thread for discussing the offense.

Through 10 games, the 2012 Nats have scored 39 runs.
Through 10 games, the 2011 Nats scored 43 runs.

The 2011 Nats had the lowest #RS of any team since the franchise moved to DC.

Other teams through 10 games:

2010 - 45
2009 - 50
2008 - 44
2007 - 23
2006 - 42
2005 - 41

Doesn't *really* mean anything, of course.  I just thought it would make an interesting snapshot.

Our stellar pitching (hopefully it continues) somewhat compensates for the lack of the production at the plate.

For comparison purposes, here's the rest of the NL East:
Mets - 30
Atlanta - 41
Philadelphia - 28
Miami - 36

^^^  Right, we just need to be less offensively futile than everyone else ;)

I'm looking forward to seeing how we match up with the division head to head.

Offense has been terrible.  Basically 3 guys out of the 8 starting position players have been hitting.  Flores has been good in part time duty and Chad Tracy saved our azzes the first few games - since then, he's looked as bad as everyone else.

This is probably Mindfacting® on my part, but I don't think anyone is on fire with the offense this season.

Werth, LaRoche, and Desi have been above average.  Espi, Zim, Ramos, and LF have been below average. Even if everyone regresses to career norms, we are going to have a very average offense at best until Morse and hopefully Harper come to the rescue.

I would not expect a trade for a CF unless Harper is not ready by the trade deadline.

That's what I'm feeling about the offense on a very macro level.

I really thought this thread was going to be about Patton's ETO campaign vs. Montgomery in North Africa.  Oh well.

Offense is still an issue with this team. Personally, I think DeRosa needs to step up and hit, or get put back on the bench. Lombardozzi or maybe even Moore should get some playing time.

Is DeRosa our Stares of 2012?

Where's the General Pitching Discussion thread?  That'll be much more cheery.

This is a good point, and its one of those context things I always forget - the overall offense is down in the NL for the last several years and will probably continue to be down - sluggers (Fielder, Pujols) left to the AL and a lot of teams have good rotations.  Rather than score more than we did last year, if we just duplicate what we did last year while others regress, that's progress.

Still, though, I worry that what we've seen will be more or less like this - Desmond and LaRoche will cool off, Zimm will heat up, Morse will come back, someone else will get hurt, etc.  WYSIWYG.

Eh, I hope not. But I think we need to at least have a season long plan at LF. DeRosa isn't hitting like it. Morse is guaranteed to be 100% when he comes back. I think the Nats know this and that's why Tyler Moore is getting time in LF at Syracuse

Very few are tearing it up in Syracuse.  Harper is hitting .220.  Tyler Moore is a respectable .297 though.

Moore is impressing so far. A lot of people thought his average would take a big hit in Triple A and he would be an all or nothing hitter. Granted, it's a small sample size.

Adam Dunn-ish production?

I like it.  Yankees aren't taking a hit with Brett Gardner in LF, so why not Lombo for us?  Now all we need is Cano, Granderson, etc.  :)

I must be one of the few people not on board with Tyler Moore in DC.  He needs to prove something for an extended period of time.  He's really streaky, and when he has a cold streak, he is TERRIBLE.

Ramos with a homer and LaRoche nearly had two homers.  Zim with a couple of hits.  Werth another hit.  Desmond a hit and a walk and a couple of runs scored.

LF is still kind of a black hole.

But the runs will come if the Nats keep hitting like this.

If Lombo isn't a LF liability I'd play him there every day

He can't be more of a liabity than DeRosa or Morse.
