I just think a lot of team really overrate big men, especially true centers who aren't athletic. Shaq with the Lakers may be the last time a team in that mold won the title, and they had Kobe.

I think this is at least partially true thanks to the implementation of rules like the defensive three second violation, but there are definitely times that the "not terribly athletic / basketball savvy big man" works out, Dwight Howard being the obvious example (when he first entered the league).

ESPN showed the list last night and I was surprised to see Webber lead it.  I think they showed 3-4 guys, and Bowie was in there, just don't remember the order.

EDIT: Just found a modified list in the article on ESPN.  They include David Robinson (Bowie wasn't #1 overall, he was picked #2 after Olajuwon, and played 139 games his first 4 years).  Robinson had his Navy commitment, which was two years, and ESPN is wrong as he played 164 games his first 4 years.

The true top 4 now are Oden, Webber, Bill Walton and Mychal Thompson.  Oden, Walton and Thompson were #1 overall picks by Portland.  That's as close to a true curse as you can get.

Blake Griffin just had a beastly breakout game.  44 points (many on spectacular dunks), 15 rebounds, 7 assists, 2 steals and 1 block.  Of course, the Clippers lost, but that should go without saying.

The Pacers are doing remarkably well.  They just beat the Lakers, which adds to a growing, decently impressive resume.  If they keep this up, they should make the playoffs.

On another note; I tuned into Sportsnation after the Terps game for a quick bit and they discussed if LBJ was overhyped (or another version of it. Forgot exactly).

Anyway, the other person not named Beadle was talking about how Kobe was kind of in the same situation before the Lakers got Gasol. I do remember people hating on him because supposedly he was whining. Then he won a ring and became royalty. The guy made a good point becuase I can see Lebron getting the same treatment. The difference between the two is that I've always liked Kobe. I can't stand Lebron.

Cleveland has sold out every game this season.  The team locked people into season ticket contracts before it was clear whether LeBron was staying or going.  The game was disappointing as hell... with that kind of hometown support even a mediocre team could have accomplished something, but the Cavs simply collapsed.

This week in the NBA

The father of Memphis Grizzlies player O.J. Mayo faces charges in West Virginia of trying to kill a police officer and other counts following a chase.

The Huntington Police Department says in a news release that 39-year-old Kenneth Maurice Ziegler of Huntington was arrested Thursday morning. He's charged with attempted murder, two drug counts, obstructing and two fleeing counts.

Police say officers were searching for someone else at about 3:30 a.m. Thursday when they saw a person inside a vehicle trying to hide. When they confronted the man, he drove the vehicle into one officer and dragged him for several feet.

Ziegler was arrested following a pursuit. He was being held Thursday at the Western Regional Jail. Jail records did not indicate whether he has an attorney.
