Just heard this - what a great form of advertising for Living Social.  Is anyone on this board going to take a longer look now at Living Social ?

No idea who the are or what they do, sounds metro sexual.

I'll get right on their site next time I'm in the mood to slip into some slim fit jeans and get a facial while sipping a lemon drop martini and listening to Kanye.

:lmao:

This is great though- the Metro is my only way home other than an expensive cab ride. And at least for UMD students free taxi service is given to certian parts of College Park and the UMD campus when the buses stop running- including the Metro. Glad I can stay to the end.

Brilliant marketing, for a few grand bailing out the cheap as Lerner family they will get publicity worth hundreds of thousands.

A few grand?  I can't imagine running the Metro even for an hour is that cheap.

I was really on the fence about that day spa and 2 hours of teeth whitening, but this seals the deal.

[edit: full disclosure...I am wearing Invisaline braces--or whatever you call these damned things--that I bought with a Groupon]

Refunded for every rider during the extra hour at the new premium rate. So the actual cost would be much less than the deposit.

I'll bet they are getting something from the Nats for this.

I also heard that the organization that was really against the Nats paying for this was the MLB.

The Nats have yet to mention Living Social on either their website or on Twitter.  The team even retweeted a message from Metro about the extension, selecting the one Tweet that omitted the name of their benefactor.

Right, great move by Living Social, they'll be mentioned repeatedly throughout the playoffs by every local media outlet when reporting on the games, probably pissing the old man off that another company is making a buck off the Nationals and he's not getting a cut.

I wonder how many people will ride to the game. If 10,000 do at 4.50 fare, that'd be only 4,500. 20,000 would be 9,000, under 33% of the deposit. And that's assuming the games goes late.

Want to check your math?  or did you mean (1,000 or 2,000) x $4.50?

The late night fares are somewhere in the range of $5.36 so it doesn't take as many riders to make up the difference.  Also, Living Social only put down a deposit, if none of the games go late they get a full refund.

(When I was back at GMU 10,000 times 4.50 was 45K)  :-)

Event organizers are required to put down a $29,500 deposit for an extra hour of service. WMATA refunds whatever is left of the deposit based on how many riders take trains during the extended period. For example, 5,229 customers used Metro after Madonna's concert at Verizon Center Sunday, so the actual cost to the arena was only $1,472.

Typo :-[ last time there was an extended game only a couple hundred used the Metro. But if they go over 5000 then that'd be an good return.

Here's the first comment from the team, not a "Thank you" in sight, just an acknowledgement that the team expected someone else to foot the bill.

this is really good news...but, also really embarrassing for the franchise (well, it should be embarrassing)

...in the name of all that is good, may I ask why??

afaik, they didn't want to set a precedent that clubs would pay for transportation.

...understandable but still a bit odd (if we didn't have Metro, I wouldn't be able to attend the matches since I don't drive).
